uniform: girl on the go
happy october first!! i always think of october as signaling the start of the holiday season. doesn’t it feel as though the rest of the year starts to fly by once the month begins?
with so much on the calendar already (and i’m sure the same is true for you), i thought i would share my usual “on-the-go” uniform for cooler weather. there are a few key switches that dress up the outfit a teensy bit, making you feel more put together - and i always find that when i feel more put together, i’m more productive and get more done. here’s how i do it:
1. jeans over leggings
i know it may seem like you’re sacrificing comfort for style with this, but getting a pair that has great stretch will have you barely noticing the difference. mine are from express, and i’ve found that denim with 70-75% cotton and 1% spandex have great stretch but don’t lose their shape over time, so be sure to check the tag the next time you’re shopping.
i prefer a cropped style, but you could easily do a longer hem and pair it with boots or booties, too.
2. a (faux) leather jacket
a classic leather jacket is a staple in anyone’s closet, and I’ve worn mine so much that it’s broken in and completely soft. you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a great piece - budget-friendly brands include blankNYC, Zara, Free People, and Topshop. this authentic jacket from Abercrombie seems pricey, but when you join the AF loyalty club and stack a promo code on top of it, you can get a high quality jacket for a great deal.
great alternatives to a leather jacket also include a wrap sweater, boyfriend cardigan, oversize trench, or a bomber jacket. if the weather is particularly warm, i love adding a plaid shirt for a lighter layer.
as you can see, i wore a fitted white tee, but oversized or relaxed fits work well, too, and are usually a little bit comfier.. avoid graphics or writing for a sleeker look. my favorite plain tees are by amour vert, and i love how sustainable they are - more on that here.
3. step up your shoe game
i’ve talked before about finding amazing discounts from shoes on Amazon (click here). the pair i am wearing in these photos were only $40, and i think they elevate the outfit much more than rubber sandals would (and the arch support is an added plus). they’re still available for purchase here.
my go-to shoes when i have a busy day ahead are shoppable below:
4. keep the rest simple
i’m not one for jewelry, and i try to keep my accessories really simple most of the time. sunglasses are an obvious staple - i keep a pair in just about everywhere (ridiculous, maybe, but my eye doctor’s not complaining so neither am i). you can shop the ones i’m wearing here. i also go for a smaller bag or backpack on extra busy days because i prefer to be hands-free. my go-to’s are the rebecca minkoff mini MAB (pictured above), which all the necessities, or my herschel backpack, which is waterproof.
i’ve found that creating go-to “uniforms” for various occasions in my life has made getting dressed so much easier. i don’t have to put too much thought into what i’m wearing, but am still dressed appropriately and feel put together.
it also ensures i’m getting good use out of the pieces in my closet. rather than reaching for that worn in hoodie hoodie (better suited for the end of the day when i’m cozy at home), going for equally comfortable tees and jackets allows me to actually wear the things i buy. you can’t just save everything for that special occasion.. 😉
another positive? getting into this habit has gotten me out of the habit of buying uncomfortable pieces or items that are difficult to wear just because they’re cute, ha.
thank you for reading + i hope you have a good day x
and thank you to my mommmm for taking these photos - isn’t she the best? obviously this is not the only reason that she’s so great, ha.
