Davines OI Souffle Review

I’m a less-is-more type person when it comes to hair. Although I love trying new products and am always looking for the best of the best, I don’t like using anything that feels unnecessary. When you get your hair done at the salon, there’s a whirlwind of mists, sprays, oils, and treatments, but I don’t find it realistic to recreate that lineup at home. When my hair stylist insisted I try the Davines OI Soufflé, I was a little skeptical. I let my hair air dry, and have the curling routine down at this point, so I didn’t see much of a benefit to it. However, I love Davines and find a lot of their products to be worth the money, so I decided to give the OI Soufflé a try.

It’s marketed as a modern mousse that will give your hair added shine, softness, and body without weighing it down. When I think of hair mousse, I think of crunchy, sticky hair - true 80s nostalgia - so I was eager to see how the Davines OI Soufflé would perform. Keep reading for my full review, pros, cons, tips on how to use the product, and if I think it’s worth the money.

how to use davines oi soufflé

  • Apply Davines OI Soufflé to washed, towel-dried hair. You’ll get best results with damp hair.

  • Start with around 2 pumps if you have fine hair (3-4 if you have thick hair), and distribute the product from the mid-section to the ends of you r hair. Avoid the roots.

    • My hair is fine but long; I stick to around 2.5 pumps because the scent of the Soufflé can be overpowering and I’m sensitive to heavy fragrance.

    • If you get a little product close to your roots, don’t worry. It won’t mess up your hair and isn’t a deal-breaker. The mousse is light and won’t weigh down your hair or ruin your look. I mention it so you don’t use more product than you need, especially since it’s pricey.

  • You may need an extra pump of product, but I always recommend starting with less so you don’t overdo it.

  • Then style your hair as you choose. When I’m at the salon, my stylist blow dries my hair and then curls it. At home, I let it air dry (sometimes overnight) and then curl it. There’s no wrong way to use the product.

    • It’ll add a little texture if you air-dry and your hair is naturally straight, but won’t make your hair wavy like some traditional mousses do.

pros

  • This product works and delivers on its promises - my hair was noticeably shinier and softer.

  • I loved that it didn’t make my hair crunchy or sticky like other mousses do. It also didn’t leave a film, like some softening products do.

  • It reduced frizz a little. Not so much at the roots where I have baby hairs, but I felt like my hair looked more put together after using Oi Shuffle. It definitely gives you that post-salon look.

  • It makes your hair easier to work with. I found my hair was quicker to curl, and the curls lasted longer.

  • It doesn’t add tangles to your hair like some styling products do.

  • It doesn’t weigh your hair down, something that Davines other Oi product, Oi Milk, can sometimes do.

  • My hair was a bit bouncier and had a little more volume, but nothing crazy.

cons

  • The scent is stronger than I personally like, but that is true for most of the Davines Oi products. It’s also a more masculine scent; I think you’ll either love it or hate it, to be honest.

  • It’s pricey at $47 per bottle. You don’t need much product so the bottle will last you a while, but I also don’t think yo could get away with the mini size like you can with other hair products.

  • This is a “your hair but better” product, so it won’t add lots of texture like some traditional mousses do. I see that as a pro, but included it as a con as it limits how versatile this product might be for you, especially compared to other mousses.

is davines oi soufflé worth it?

It’s worth it, but I wouldn’t say that Davines OI Soufflé is necessary, if that makes sense. If you want your hair to look like you just stepped out of the salon, Davines OI Soufflé is your new best friend. It gives your hair incredible shine, makes your hair look and feel polished, and provides softness without weighing your hair down or leaving a film. This product truly is a modern-day mousse - forget the crunchy, sticky products of the 80s.

I’ve decided this is a special-event product for me; it photographs well, helps my style stay in place, and gives my hair that extra “oomph” that you typically get from professional styling. $47 is a little too expensive for me to use on a regular basis, especially since I wash my hair daily, but if hair is your thing, it’s worth it because this product actually delivers.

To make your purchase count a little extra, I recommend buying from Nordstrom or Sephora (whichever reward program you belong to) since you’ll earn points. It’s also available to buy on Amazon; the two-day shipping can’t be beat and saves you from having to drive out to a salon.
