Best Hydrating Shampoos for Thick, Grey Hair
Today’s post is another guest spot for my mom, and all about her favorite hydrating shampoos for her thick, grey hair. She’s always had really good hair; it’s thick, healthy, and has natural shine. As the grey has grown in, she’s had to work with coarser texture that can be a little frizzy. She heat styles her hair regularly, so she needs a hydrating shampoo that locks in moisture and repairs damage without weighing her hair down or leaving a film or residue.
Together we’ve rounded up the hydrating shampoos that she loves and recommends. For more, make sure to check out her list of favorite grey hair products as well as the best hair masks specifically for grey hair.
the best hydrating shampoos for thick, grey hair
oribe silverati shampoo
There’s no denying that Oribe is expensive, but this shampoo is absolutely worth the money. It makes your grey hair so shiny and look fresh and toned without tinting it purple or drying it out. A little goes a long way, and this bottle will last you long enough to justify the price, especially if you only wash your hair 1-2x a week. This makes your hair look like you just stepped out of a salon, and hydrates it deeply without weighing it down, making it easier to style later on.
davines oi shampoo
This shampoo is truly hydrating and makes your hair sleek and shiny without feeling heavy or leaving a film/ residue behind. The scent can be a little overpowering for some, which is why my mom prefers Oribe more, but she still uses the Oi All in One Hair Milk to style her hair every time she blows it dry. You don’t have to go to a salon to purchase this; Nordstrom regularly has it in stock, as does Amazon (I’ve ordered it a few times and have never received a sketchy dupe).
amika the kure bond repair shampoo
While the brand has a few different hydrating shampoo options, The Kure shampoo is their best; it’s lightweight, suds well without damaging your hair, and removes all product buildup without stripping your scalp of its natural oils. I use this one too, and I think it’s one of the few shampoos that works for everyone. My mom also loves their hydro rush Intense Moisture Mask with Hyaluronic Acid if you need a hair mask/ conditioner.
aveda blue malva shampoo
If you are looking for a blue toner as opposed to purple, this shampoo is excellent. It’s a little more expensive than you typically want to spend, but the bulk size will last for a long time, especially since a little goes a long way. The results make the price worth it; this shampoo suds well without drying your hair, adds shine, and is gentle enough that it won’t tangle wiry hair.
kevin murphy hydrate me wash
The Hydrate Me Wash is ultra-hydrating, cleans your hair without stripping natural oils, and tames frizz without weighing your hair down. The brand calls their shampoos “washes” for some reason, and this is a bit thicker than most shampoos, but it’s still easy to wash out. My mom prefers the Oribe for its consistency and easy of purchasing (you typically have to buy Kevin Murphy through your salon), but this is a great, slightly cheaper option that still provides high-quality results.
