Dae Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray Review
If you’re trying to add volume, grip, and effortless texture to your hair, a good texturizing spray can make a huge difference. As someone born in the 90s with naturally straight hair, it feels like I’ve been in pursuit of the Olsen twin messy beach wave look for my whole life. Enter: texturizing spray. Meant to add piece-y movement and give you that effortlessly undone look, texturizing spray can absolutely transform your hair and is the secret to so many of the enviable looks you see on Instagram and the red carpet. If you’re someone who wants to rock your natural texture but it never quite turns out the way you want, texturizing spray may also be the missing ingredient for you, too.
That said, not all texturizing sprays are created equally. One of my favorites is pretty expensive (over $50 a bottle), so when I saw Dae had their own texturizing spray coming out, known as the Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray, I was instantly curious. I’ve reviewed all of Dae’s hair products, and they’re sadly hit or miss for me, so while I had high hopes, I was hesitant.
For my full, unsponsored review of the Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray, before and after results, tips on how to use it, advice on who it works best for and how it compares to Dae’s Strong Hold Flexible Hairspray, keep reading.
dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray review
what is the dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray?
The Dae Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray is a lightweight styling spray designed to add texture, movement, and soft volume without making hair stiff or sticky.
Unlike traditional hairspray, texturizing sprays focus on creating separation and fullness rather than locking hair into place. The result is a more natural, lived-in look that works well for loose waves, layered hair, and undone styles (like boho updos or braids).
Dae’s Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray is best used for soft beachy texture (or working with your natural texture) while still keeping hair touchable.
what the dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray does
The Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray is meant to:
add volume and fullness
create piece-y texture
enhance waves or curls (either natural or heat-styled)
enhance layers
give hair grip for styling (whereas hairspray offers long-term hold post-styling)
reduce flat or slippery hair (think of how some hair needs to be a little dirty to hold a curl or style; this texturizing spray does that work for you)
Dae’s Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray works best on hairstyles that need movement rather than firm hold, like beach waves, loose curls, boho braids, or messy buns.
key ingredients in the dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray
There are two key ingredients that make the Dae Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray unique:
Mojave Yucca - a natural, saponin-rich plant root, this helps to cleanse and exfoliate without stripping your hair.
Dae signature desert botanical blend - Not just an Arizona brand via location, this spray contains Dae’s unique blend that nourishes and strengthens to give you bouncy, shiny, healthy-looking hair.
When it comes to hair products, oftentimes what is omitted from the ingredient list is just as important as what’s in it. The Dae Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray is formulated without parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, and sulfates SLS & SLES. While the scent is pretty and somewhat strong, it also contains less than 1% synthetic fragrance, making this one of the cleanest dry texturing sprays available on the market.
It’s also vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free.
pros
Lightweight; doesn’t make your hair feel heavy
Gives you tons of volume and fullness
Helps give you a slightly un-done, piece-y look (think beach waves and messy updos)
Enhances waves or natural texture (especially if you have layers)
The fruity scent is so pretty without being fake or chemical-y
The nozzle locks so you can travel with it without making a mess
Refreshes your look if you need to adjust the style mid-day
Not a dry shampoo, but lightly absorbs oil at the root (don’t use in replace of dry shampoo, though!)
cons
Using too much will make your hair feel sticky/ gritty/ grimy
Can cause tangles
The scent may be too strong for some
Doesn’t really help hold your style if you have fine hair
Does not offer heat protection
Not strong enough for long-lasting hold; you may need to reapply later in the day
Not ideal for sleek or structured hairstyles
If you’re looking for a product that will give you maximum hold that lasts all day, a traditional hairspray may work better.
dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray before and after
I have stick-straight hair and like to curl my hair with my tried-and-true $20 titanium iron; I’ve found my hair holds the curl best when it’s freshly washed (day two hair is too heavy). I applied the Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray after my curls had cooled, and then scrunched my hair for a messy, undone look. I then pulled some of the curls apart and found that the texturizing spray did give me that Olsen twin, piece-y look. I added a few extra smaller curls (like highlight size) to look even more textured, but you could honestly just spray and go without touching up your hair.
I also sprayed it at my roots, and was impressed by the volume I got! I love that my hair felt bouncier, but not crunchy like it does with traditional hairspray. The look was slightly more matte than it is with hairspray, but I didn’t mind.
how to use the dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray
Just a note: Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray doesn’t offer heat protection, so make sure you’ve applied one before styling your hair. You can obviously skip it if you are working with your natural texture.
Shake gently.
Hold 6-8 inches away and spray onto dry hair for texture and volume. You do not want to spray too close to your hair, or it’ll disperse too much product and your hair will feel gritty, grimy, and be harder to deal with.
Start with just a little bit - “too much of a good thing” absolutely applies to texturizing spray. You can always add more if needed.
Tousle and repeat as desired.
Because I heat style first, I like to scrunch my hair and then pull some curls apart for a messy, beach wave look.
The texturizing spray can be applied to your natural hair to accentuate texture, or post-curling for a beachy, lived-in look.
With some texturizing sprays, you apply them prior to styling your hair, but I find you can apply the Dae Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray before or after styling.
If you want extra volume, spray lightly at the roots and lift the hair while spraying.
who the dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray works best for
The Dae Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray works best for hair types that need extra grip and body. You’re either accentuating your natural texture, or adding a little volume and messiness to hot tool curls. I recommend it if you have:
fine hair that struggles to hold texture; this gives your hair a little grit
medium hair that needs more volume
layered haircuts, especially if you have a little natural wave, bend, or curl
It’s also an absolute dream for:
beach wave styling
loose or undone hairstyles, like messy half-ups or updos
boho, messy braids
Texturizing spray gives you a lived-in, touchable look, so think movement, not super-strength hold that stays all day.
who the dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray might not work for
There’s nothing more frustrating than purchasing a hair product that keeps getting rave reviews, only to have it not work for you. I’ve dealt with that more times than I can count, and because dry texturizing spray can be a little fussy to work with, you might want to skip it if:
you want your hairstyle to last longer (get hairspray instead)
you have extremely dry or coarse hair
you have fine, straight hair and don’t use a hot tool (this won’t give you texture; it accentuates what you have)
you like sleek, shiny hairstyles
dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray vs dae sunsetter strong hold flexible hairspray results
While texturizing spray may similar to hairspray, they’re two separate hair products that provide different results - see my full texturizing spray vs hairspray guide with before-and-after comparisons.
In general:
Sunsetter Strong Hold Spray - best for finishing and setting styles (check out my review with before and after photos)
Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray - best for adding volume, grip, and texture
They both retail for $30, and both products have the same citrus scent, which can be strong but doesn’t give me a headache (and I’m sensitive to fragrance). They’re also vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free, and formulated without parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, and sulfates SLS & SLES.
If you’re deciding between the two, it usually comes down to whether your hair needs structure and all-day hold, or if you want a beachy, lived in look. For more details, check out my full comparison of how the texturizing spray compares to the hairspray, which includes a list of when each product would perform better for you.
In short, I recommend the Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray, but because of the nozzle issues, skip the Sunsetter Strong Hold Flexible Hairspray. However, you can absolutely use both texturizing spray for volume and texture, then a light layer of hairspray (I like this one by Davines) for hold.
is the dae fairy blaster dry texturizing spray worth it?
If you like soft, lived-in hairstyles with lots of movement, the Dae Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray can be a great styling product to add to your routine. It gives you volume, grip, and a beachy texture without the stiffness of hairspray. As someone with naturally straight hair, I love how it makes my hot tool waves look a little more natural and boho, but you can also use it to accentuate your natural texture if you have curly or wavy hair (especially if you have layers).
However, if your main goal is strong hold or long-lasting styles, you’ll probably prefer hairspray.
Still, the price is fair ($30) compared to some of the other great texturizing sprays (like Oribe’s), so if you want a beachy look with added volume and a product that doesn’t contain sulfates or harsh ingredients, I recommend the Dae Fairy Blaster Dry Texturizing Spray.
