Everywhere you look, it seems like someone is raving about the K18 Leave-in Molecular Repair Mask and calling it their holy grail hair product. Of course, that made me want to instantly add it to my cart… until I saw the price. At $75 per bottle, I was floored. I’m so stranger to higher-end beauty products, but that price seemed a little too intense for me. But after adding up how much I spend to get my hair colored, I remembered that the hair products I use at home are somewhat of an investment plan. They’re meant to repair damage and keep my hair healthy, the color bright, and genuinely make me feel better and more put together. But still… $75? I know that’s not in everyone’s budget, so I decided to take one for the team and buy the K18 Leave-in Molecular Repair Mask and test it out for myself.

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is meant to be used on freshly washed (not conditioned) hair:

  • In the shower, shampoo your hair but skip conditioner.

  • Using a towel (microfiber is most gentle), dry your hair until it is damp.

  • Apply a dime-sized amount of K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask. You can always add more, but start with a dime-sized. My hair is fine but long, and I stick to a little over a dime-sized amount (the equivalent of a rounded scoop, if we want to make a baking analogy haha).

  • Work the product in evenly from ends to your root. Going from the bottom to top seems counter intuitive, but it gives you the most bang for your buck as the ends of your hair typically need more TLC than the roots.

    • I like to apply the mask from mid-length to ends, and then whatever is leftover on my hands, I’ll massage into the roots/ scalp.

  • Let your hair sit and soak up the product for 4 minutes in order for it to activate.

  • Do not rinse out.

  • You can then apply heat protectant and style your hair normally.

  • For optimal results, use the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask consecutively (instead of conditioner) for your first 4-6 washes; then you can switch to maintenance mode and use it as needed.

Unfiltered, unsponsored, raw truth for you: if you have extreme damage, lots of breakage, or bleach your hair regularly, YES the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is 100% worth it. You only need a little bit, so while the price is steep up front, it’ll last you a long time.

I use it once a month, and the regular size bottle has lasted me almost a year. I am prone to the frustrating breakage around my crown and roots, and as someone with fine hair, I need a repairing treatment that works but won’t weigh down my hair or make it greasy, sticky, or crunchy, and K18 is worth it.

I’ve noticed less breakage, less frizz, and stronger hair since I started using it. I did follow the instructions as far as using it post-shampoo for the first 6 washes, and then switched to maintenance mode, but it didn’t feel like I wasted a ton of product or already used half the bottle from doing it this way.

The main downside to the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is that it doesn’t offer heat protection, but because I have a few heat protectants that I like, I don’t mind too much.

If the price deters you like it did with me, I recommend getting the travel size to start with. It may cost more per ounce like a lot of travel/ trial sizes do, but sometimes spending less up front is more feasible, and you get to really test the product out before investing. But if the $75 price tag is still scary, I do have a few dupes that I also love and recommend.

K18 products are highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way, but you still have to pay a lot up front. Doing the math, a full size bottle of K18 Leave-in Molecular Repair Mask is $75 for 1.7oz of product, which comes out to $44.12 per ounce. Keeping that number in mind, these are some of my favorite dupes:

Dae Mirage Mist Leave-In Conditioner - Love this and it’s such a steal at $30 for a 5oz bottle (aka $6 per ounce vs K18’s $44.12). The scent is fruity and fresh; if you have kids they’ll love this, too. This addresses dryness like K18, but doesn’t have the long-term repair technology that K18 does. I recommend it if you want a leave-in conditioner that makes your hair soft and also offers heat protection, but if you have extreme damage and breakage, get the K18 Repair Mask or a different dupe.

Pureology Color Fanatic Heat Protectant Leave-In Conditioner - While Pureology is not a brand I reach for often, this leave-in is a hidden gem. The formula includes camellia, coconut, and olive oil to really nurture your hair, preventing breakage as it detangles, smooths frizz, and adds shine. It’s also color safe like the K18 formula, but an added benefit to Pureology’s leave-in is that it offers heat protection, whereas K18 does not. Priced at $20 for a 3oz bottle, you end up paying $6.67 per ounce so it’s around 85% cheaper than the K18 Leave-in Molecular Repair Mask.

Crown Affair The Leave-In Conditioner Cream - I love this leave-in conditioner; it really tames frizz, makes your hair silky soft, and is safe for all hair types (plus it’s gluten-free). It detangles, softens, and helps define your natural texture, so if you are a low-maintenance beauty person, this is worth checking out. It’s also a heat protectant, and I always feel a little more put together whenever I use it. Price-wise, it’s fair at $48 for a 5.1oz bottle that’s glass and feels really high end (comes out to $9.41 per ounce).

Olaplex No.5L Moisturize & Mend Leave-In Conditioner - While The K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is often compared to Olaplex No.3 (more on that below), I’d consider No.5L to be a more similar dupe. It’s more expensive than the other dupes I’ve mentioned when you break it down per ounce ($34 for a 3.3oz bottle, or $10.30 per ounce), but totally worth the money. This is the closest you’re going to get to K18’s patented technology for hair repair. Olaplex No.5L seals split ends, is formulated to create a shield around the follicle to prevent future damage, and hydrates your hair. Just like K18, it also makes your hair soft, but what sets Olaplex apart is that it offers heat protection and also detangles. If you want a repairing treatment and not just a leave-in, softening product but can’t justify K18’s price tag, I recommend Olaplex No.5L Moisturize & Mend Leave-In Conditioner.

Both of these K18 products are designed to repair hair, combat dryness, and protect against future damage, but there are a few key differences. As such, you could add both to your routine, but if you’re only in the market for one, here’s my comparison:

No. If you’re looking for a repairing product from K18 that also doubles as a heat protectant, get the K18 Molecular Repair Oil as it works as a heat protectant up to 450°F (232°C).

If you want a leave-in conditioner vibe that also works as a heat protectant, I love Dae’s Mirage Mist Leave-In Conditioner (and it’s $45 cheaper - retails for $30).

Yes - I have highlighted hair and unlike some other hair oils, the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask hasn’t caused any brassiness or fading. As far as haircare brands go, K18 is one of the best for color-treated hair.

Both offer bond repair and work to combat dryness, damage, and breakage, but are meant for different parts of your haircare routine. They’re both vegan, make your hair soft and smooth, and strengthen your hair. If you wanted to, you could use both together; I consider them to be bookends of a repairing haircare routine.

K18 Leave-in Molecular Hair Mask is more expensive at $75 for a 1.7oz bottle; Olaplex No.3PLUS Complete Bond Repair Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment is $34 for a 3.3oz bottle - the breakdown would be $44.12 per ounce (K18) vs $10.30 per ounce (Olaplex), so Olaplex No.3PLUS Complete Bond Repair Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment is a much more budget-friendly option.

Even though it’s more expensive, I personally prefer K18 Leave-in Molecular Hair Mask as I’m not one for pre-wash treatments. If anything, I like to just add coconut oil to the ends of my hair to add in a little extra protection before washing, and that lets me spend more on leave-ins or higher quality shampoo. I also prefer the K18 leave-in because it’s going to stay in your hair and work over time, whereas you wash the Olaplex out after 3 minutes (per the directions).
