Natural Non-Toxic Bug and Tick Repellent Recipe
Bug bites are incredibly annoying, and I’ve found that I get bit more and more each year. Most bug sprays smell terrible, only work sporadically, leave a sticky residue, and just feel uncomfortable to use. I’m also wary of ticks, so I wanted to find an option that works to repel both bugs and ticks. A friend shared this homemade recipe with me, and while I was quite skeptical, it really does work (and smells nice). I know there’s lots of mixed opinions about essential oils; everyone is entitled to their own opinions and should do what works for them. I don’t agree with MLM marketing, so I do not sell anything and there are no essential oil links in this post - just a recipe you can follow along with. I hope that it helps you!
natural, non-toxic bug and tick repellent spray recipe
ingredients
Makes one 16oz spray bottle
16oz spray bottle - I love these glass bottles that have a silicone sleeve so that they don’t crack or break; I find glass holds essential oil blends better than plastic bottles, and the silicone sleeves make them easier to travel with.
20 drops Citronella
10 drops Purification - This is a blend created by Young Living; I do prefer their oils as they’re concentrated and pure, but you could probably find something similar from a different brand, too.
10 drops Lavender
10 drops Tea Tree
8 drops Kunzea (add this oil specifically for ticks)
8 drops Eucalyptus
6 drops Peppermint
4 drops Rosemary
4 drops Clove
4 drops Thyme
4 drops Cedarwood
Witch Hazel
Carrier oil - I prefer coconut oil but you can also use almond oil or jojoba oil.
Water
to make:
Add all of the essential oils to your glass jar.
Add two big squeezes of witch hazel.
Add 10 pumps of your carrier oil (I used coconut oil).
Fill the rest of the jar with water.
Shake before use.
