Ouai Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque Review

The OUAI Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque is designed to hydrate, soften, and smooth hair without making finer textures feel weighed down. Unlike ultra-rich masks made for thick or coarse hair, this version aims to deliver moisture while still keeping hair light and bouncy.

As someone with fine, straight hair, I’ve struggled to find a mask that’s nourishing without leaving a film or making my hair feel heavy or greasy. That said, I have highlights and get my hair bleached regularly, so I need a hair mask that actually hydrates and moisturizes.

Below, I share my full, unsponsored review of the OUAI Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque with information on texture, how it feels, and if it actually repairs damage.

ouai fine to medium hair treatment masque review

I’ve been a fan of the OUAI Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque for years, and it’s one of my favorite hair masks. The Fine to Medium version is lightweight, hydrating, and creamy without being overly thick. They do make a different version, the Thick Hair Treatment Masque, which is specifically formulated for coarse, dense, or very dry hair.

The Fine to Medium version is formulated for fine to medium hair that is slightly dry or damaged. Meant to fight frizz and dullness while adding shine and moisture, this is the ultimate “everyday” masque that you can use 2-3x a week without worrying about weighing your hair down or leaving a film or greasy feeling.

It works into your hair seamlessly and is just as easy to wash out, and I love to use it as a conditioner substitute in the summer or winter months, when my hair is more prone to dryness and environmental damage.

If you are someone who loves voluminous hair and hates how masks can make your hair flat, you want to try the Ouai masque - it genuinely adds bounce and makes your hair look like you just left the salon.

The main downside to this masque, in my opinion, is the scent. Like all OUAI products, the scent is strong and perfume-like with a heavy floral base. If you already enjoy OUAI’s fragrances, you’ll probably like it. But if you prefer fragrance-free or subtle/ more natural scents, this masque may be too overpowering. I’ve gotten used to it at this point, and it fortunately doesn’t linger for long. I’m sensitive to fragrance (migraines), and this has never triggered a headache for me.

However, if they ever made a vanilla or St. Barts version, I’d be over the moon - maybe manifesting it? Haha.

masque texture and how it made my hair feel

Part of what makes the OUAI Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque unique is its texture. It’s creamy, yet lightweight. Thinner than the Ouai conditioners, this masque works into your hair beautifully, helps detangle, and easily coats every strand while still washing out quickly and efficiently.

Whereas some masks feel like butter or are thicker, the Ouai masque is closer to a standard conditioner yet is much more hydrating. I think this is why the mask makes your hair so soft without weighing it down; you get noticeable volume and bounce anytime you use this.

Overall, after using the Ouai masque, my hair is softer and easier to manage, less frizzy, and smoother at the ends. It’s one of the most effective lightweight masks I’ve tried, and I used it as a conditioner replacement for years.

is it good for damaged hair?

The OUAI Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque is not the best mask for repairing damage, but it can improve it somewhat.

If your hair is a little dry and prone to heat damage or frizz, it works well, but for severe damage or breakage, you will want something stronger (not the thick version). I recommend pairing the Ouai masque with a bond repairing leave-in conditioner or alternating with a heavier conditioner mask (or one that focuses on bond repair).

I love the OUAI Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque, but it focuses more on improving the appearance and feel of damaged hair, rather than structurally repairing it. That said, it’s lightweight enough that you can use it as a conditioner replacement if needed for an added boost, then incorporating a thicker mask for treatment days (like once a week).

  • Makes your hair super soft

  • Helps reduce frizz

  • Doesn’t weigh fine hair down as much as heavier masks do

  • Easy to rinse out

  • Good for a weekly boost

cons

  • Strong floral fragrance

  • Not intensive enough for severe damage

  • Results are more cosmetic than reparative

  • Pricy at $38

ouai masque: fine to medium vs thick version

I love that Ouai has created two versions of their mask so that all hair types can experience the benefits. Haircare is not always one size fits all, and that is especially true when it comes to rich, hydrating masks.

The Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque is better if:

  • your hair gets weighed down easily

  • you want bounce and movement

  • you have fine to medium texture

  • you prefer lighter hydration

Get the Thick version if:

  • your hair is thick coarse

  • you have dense curls or coils

  • your hair is extremely dry

  • lightweight masks never feel moisturizing enough

I will say that the Thick formula will feel too heavy on fine hair. If you want that extra moisture, pair the fine to medium masque with a leave-in conditioner for added hydration.

is the ouai fine to medium hair treatment masque worth it?

If you have fine to medium hair and want a lightweight moisture mask that makes hair feel softer and smoother without becoming greasy or flat, it’s one of my favorites and worth the $38 price tag. The OUAI Fine to Medium Hair Treatment Masque is nourishing yet lightweight; it’s slightly thicker than a traditional conditioner and tames frizz (especially at the roots and ends) without making your hair feel greasy.

Where this mask shines is that it provides the perfect balance of hydration with shine and bounce. My hair is naturally very flat, and hydrating masks typically add to this, but anytime I use the Ouai masque my hair is so lightweight and voluminous that it looks like I got it done at the salon.

That said, if your hair is extremely damaged, brittle, or heavily bleached, I recommend using the Ouai masque with a stronger, repair-focused treatment (like this leave-in bond repair) for best results.
