Is a tangle teezer worth the money?

As someone with fine, long, color-treated hair, I know that I have to take extra caution to take care of my hair. Breakage, split ends, and damage aren’t just marketing buzz words - they’re real problems that can wreck the health of your hair and play a role in your self-confidence and self-esteem. I take pride in keeping my hair healthy, mostly because I know there’s nothing more annoying than the process of growing out your hair after lots of breakage.

I’m typically skeptical of expensive hair products and tools (my $15 Conair curling iron is arguably just as good, if not better, than the $200 models out there). But as someone who washes their hair more often than recommended, I know that your hair is most fragile and susceptible to damage when it’s wet or damp. I love the finger comb method, but when my stylist recommended getting a Tangle Teezer, I was intrigued (but very skeptical of the near $20 price). I wanted to test it out over a few months (a full color and grow out cycle lasting 16 weeks) to see if it was worth it. Keep reading for my full review, plus tips to save money on yours.

tangle teezer the ultimate detangler review

As I mentioned, I did a full examination of my hair over the course of 16 weeks (from freshly colored at the salon to grown out) and wanted to see how my hair would change. I wish I took photos because my hair was much sleeker with less breakage and split ends once I switched from a standard brush to a Tangle Teezer. I didn’t change my shampoo/ conditioner/ styling products, so I really do credit the improvement in the health of my hair to the Tangle Teezer.

I noticed less breakage from root to end (especially around the middle), and overall softness. My hair took less time to detangle, and tangled less, too. The ends of my hair feel healthier, and my stylist commented that I had less split ends than I usually do, so I really do think a Tangle Teezer is worth it.

is a tangle teezer better for your hair?

I’ve 100% noticed a difference in the health of my hair since switching to a Tangle Teezer. As someone with fine, long, and color-treated hair, I experience a lot of tangles and am more prone to breakage and split ends. I didn’t change any part of my haircare routine other than switching out a regular brush (still high-end) for a Tangle Teezer, and my hair health improved dramatically - less tangles, less split-ends, and much more smooth.

tangle teezer vs wet brush

I 100% recommend a Tangle Teezer over a wet brush. Any wet brush I’ve used has broken within a few months, and while it may have untangled my hair faster, it also created more breakage so a wet brush really wasn’t worth the time (or money) saved in the long run.

tangle teezer for 3a-4c hair

While I don’t have 3a-4c hair, I have talked with friends who have Tangle Teezers (and have tried other brushes) and they all LOVE their Tangle Teezer. unlike a lot of other brushes, the bristles are flat (no ball thing at the end), so they won’t snag or rip hair. The bristles may seem too soft at first, but they bend (rather than break), so they’re less likely to harm your curls and will reduce breakage.

is a tangle teezer hairbrush worth the price?

Yes! Regardless of your hair type, the Tangle Teezer is a dream for working out tangles, makes your hair noticeably softer and less frizzy, reduces breakage, and keeps the ends of your hair much healthier than a traditional hair brush. Unlike a wet brush or similar dupes, the bristles on a Tangle Teezer don’t get worn down. I’ve used mine for months and months, and it still looks (and feels) brand new.

Tangle Teezer hairbrushes retail for around $17 ($12 for a mini version), and when you think about the damage they save you, they’re SO worth it. I can go an extra 2-3 weeks in between trims/ haircuts now, and my hair looks (and feels) so much healthier.

how to save money on tangle teezer hairbrushes

I highly recommend getting your Tangle Teezer from Amazon. Not only do you have access to a ton of fun colors, but you can get a 2-pack (comes with a mini version) for under $30. I like to keep my mini in my gym bag, but I also bring it on quicker trips (for longer travel, I bring the standard size).
