Amika The Kure Intense Strength Repair Hair Mask
When it comes to hair masks, it seems like you have to make a sacrifice: either the mask makes your hair soft but doesn’t really do anything, or it’s so rich that it weighs your hair down. I’ve tried other hair masks by Amika to mixed reviews, but one I have really grown to love is The Kure.
The Kure Intense Strength Repair Hair Mask works in two key ways. Its primary focus is on bond repair, utilizing unique technology to strengthen your hair’s bonds from the inside out. That said, what makes this mask unique is that it also nourishes your hair with vegan plant butters. Typically you’d need two products for this (one for bond repair, and another for hydration), so finding a “unicorn” that can do both effectively is quite rare.
That said, is The Kure Intense Strength Repair Hair Mask worth the hype? And does it actually work on all hair types? Keep reading for my full review with pros, cons, tips for using it, if I think it’s worth the money, and how it actually performs on dry, damaged hair.
amika the kure intense strength repair hair mask review
What makes the Amika The Kure Intense Strength Repair Hair Mask such a good mask is that finds the balance between bond repair and nourishment. Other bond repair products can leave your hair feeling dry or greasy (aka protein overload), whereas The Kure really strikes the perfect balance between hydrating and strengthening.
If you have tried bond repair products and been left underwhelmed or frustrated, I highly recommend trying The Kure mask. It’s one of the few bond repair products I’ve tried that works without a harsh learning curve; other bond repair products have either left my hair greasy or dry, whereas this mask is pretty foolproof.
The downside (or sacrifice) with this mask is that it isn’t the most hydrating; it doesn’t leave my hair especially soft and silky, but my hair does feel more nourished than when I use a normal or hydrating conditioner.
If you want longer hair and struggle with damage (especially if you highlight or bleach your hair), I highly recommend trying The Kure Hair Mask. It has made my hair stronger, more resilient, and helped it grow longer as I deal with less breakage and split ends now.
mask texture and how it made my hair feel
If I had to pick a favorite Amika mask, it’d be The Kure. Where Hydro Mask was too heavy and Soulfood was too light, the consistency and texture of The Kure is perfect. It’s creamy, buttery, and rich without being too heavy. Somehow it is the sisterhood of the traveling hair masks because anytime I have a friend try it, they love it no matter what their hair type or texture is.
The Kure Mask works short and long-term, though its best results take time so it is important to be patient. Right away, my hair feels nourished, balanced, and light. This is not the mask for you if you just want a hair mask that makes your hair feel soft and silky (go with Soulfood or Hydro Rush instead). That’s because The Kure contains bond repair technology, which focuses on strengthening (not soothing) the hair from the inside out.
You will notice the best results from the bond repair over time via less breakage and split ends; it took about a month for me to really notice how much stronger my hair had gotten. About 2 months after that is when I had my next hair appointment and my stylist noticed a difference, too.

key ingredients
Where most hair masks focus on superficial shine and softness, The Kure Intense Repair Mask nourishes the hair from the inside out, utilizing bond repair ingredients to imrpove hair health over time:
Bond-Fortifying Technology - targets and strengthens hair bonds that are most prone to breakage.
Plant Butters, like vitamin-rich mango butter extract, borage oil, and shea butter.
Vegan Proteins - made up of essential amino acids that can provide keratin-like benefits.
is it good for damaged hair?
Yes. As I mentioned, most hair masks make your hair soft and shiny, but don’t do much in regards to long-term hair health. Because The Kure Intense Repair Mask focuses on bond repair, it is an excellent mask to add to your haircare routine if you struggle with damage (split ends, breakage, etc.). You’ll get that intial softness as well as long-term benefits; it’s one of my favorite masks to use whenever my hair feels damaged, or right after I get my hair highlighted.
is the amika the kure intense strength repair worth it?
If damage is your primary haircare concern, then yes, The Kure Intense Strength Repair Mask is worth it. I have noticed an improvement in my hair health over the last year that I’ve been using the mask; I have less split ends/ breakage, and my hair feels much more resilient and stronger. Compared to other hair masks, The Kure won’t give you instant results, but if you are patient, the results are 100% worth it, especially if you style your hair with heat or bleach/ highlight it regularly.
Price-wise, The Kure Intense Strength Repair Mask isn’t cheap at $44 for an 8.4oz jar. That said, it is one of the most cost-effective (and results-worthy) bond repair products I have tried. Others are harder to use, leave your hair feeling dry or sticky, or require an extra step in your haircare routine. I love that I can use this mask weekly and see results without having to change the rest of my haircare products or dedicate a bunch of time to it.
It also works for every hair type and a little goes a long way. If you have wanted to incorporate bond repair into your haircare routine but don’t necessarily know where to start, The Kure Mask is an excellent option.

the kure vs other amika masks
What sets The Kure apart from other Amika masks is that The Kure focuses primarily on repairing damage via bond repair. On the other hand, the other two popular Amika masks (Soulfood and Hydro Rush) are formulated to hydrate and soften the hair while also adding shine. In short, if damage is your main concern, The Kure Mask is the best option. If you want a simple mask you can use weekly to hydrate your hair, you may prefer Soulfood or Hydro Rush.

Lastly, the toning Bust Your Brass Mask also contains bond repair technology, but it is specifically meant for blondes and those with silver or grey hair; it won’t make much of a difference on dark hair. If you are deciding between the two, I personally prefer The Kure paired with a purple shampoo for toning.
frequently asked questions
what hair type is the kure best for?
The Kure Intense Repair Mask is best for damaged, overprocessed, or weakened hair. It works well for fine, medium, and thick hair that needs repair.
is the kure better than olaplex no. 3?
They serve similar goals but work differently. The Kure is a rinse-out repair mask that also provides moisture, while Olaplex No. 3 is a pre-shampoo bond-building treatment. A lot of people use both in the same routine, but it is too much for my fine hair; I prefer to use them on different days.
can you use the kure every week?
Yes; once a week is typically plenty for most hair types. If you have severely damaged hair, you might want to try using it 2x a week.
does the kure weigh hair down?
Not in my experience (and I have fine hair). That said, using too much or using the mask too often can weigh your hair down.
can healthy hair use the kure?
Yes, but if your hair isn't damaged, Soulfood may be better for you as it’ll make your hair soft, shiny, and hydrated, plus you don’t have to worry about protein build-up.
why does my hair feel dry after using the kure mask?
First things first, The Kure Intense Repair Mask is specifically formulated with proteins to repair damage; it is not the mask to use if you just want soft, shiny hair (get Soulfood or Hydro Rush).
Bond repair and protein ingredients are tricky; if you use too much or use them too often, your hair can feel dry. Remember bond repair is supposed to strengthen, not soften hair. Use The Kure mask sparingly (once a week or every other week) and alternate with a hydrating mask to ensure you don’t get that protein-overload dry feeling.
