Amika Top Gloss Hair Shine Spray Review

If your hair lacks that glass-like shine finish and you’ve tried a variety of glosses or treatments just to be disappointed, a finishing spray may be what you’re missing. Where hairspray provides hold and keeps your hairstyle in place, a finishing spray instead adds shine, smooths frizz, and enhances your hairstyle style.

With different options for all hair types to use, a finishing spray can add that polish and shine that you’re missing. I’ve been a fan of Amika for a while, and when I saw that they had a high-shine finishing spray, I wanted to try it.

The Amika Top Gloss Hair Shine Spray is formulated to give your hair a glossy, salon-like finish while taming frizz, and enhancing color vibrancy, without leaving hair greasy or weighing it down. Designed for all hair types, Top Gloss also contains UV filters to help protect color-treated hair and really make it pop.

I spent a few months testing the Amika Top Gloss Hair Shine Spray on my fine, highlighted hair in different climates (because my hair frizzes like crazy in humidity) to see whether it actually delivers noticeable shine without sacrificing volume. Keep reading to see my before and after results, pros, cons, who I think it’s best for, and if it's worth buying.

amika top gloss high shine spray review

Honestly, I really love Amika Top Gloss Hair Shine Spray but it does have a little bit of a learning curve if you have fine hair.

Top Gloss does exactly what it promises to do. It adds tons of shine (not shimmer or glitter), makes your hair color look so vibrant, and can be used on sleek-straight, wavy, or curly hair. Where anti-humidity sprays require you to blow-out your hair to activate the product, you just have to spray this on dry hair.

If you have fine hair, it’s really important that you spray your hair from 10-12”. I know lots of products say that and then we just don’t follow the advice, but it’s important for Top Gloss. Spraying too close to your hair (or spraying too much) can leave your hair feeling a little greasy and will weigh your style down a little. Once I got the hang of it, though, it became one of my favorite products. If you struggle to spray your hair from far away, you can also spray the product into your hands and then run your hands through your hair to get the same results.

Where traditional hair gloss requires an in-shower application and sometimes needs to be left in for 10+ minutes, the results you get from Top Gloss are instant and much easier to achieve. The downside is that they only last until you wash your hair next (traditional hair gloss will last at least a few washes), but it’s worth it because it’s so easy to use.

I did notice a good amount of frizz control with Top Gloss, particularly from mid-lengths to ends. If you live in a really humid climate or struggle with lots of frizz, you will get the best results if you pair Top Gloss with an anti-frizz humidity spray pre-styling.

Top Gloss is not a hairspray and will not make your style last longer. If you need it, you can use both products together, though it may be too heavy for fine hair.

That said, I really do enjoy Top Gloss and it’s become a staple in my haircare routine whenever I want added shine, especially for special events and photos. I like that it doesn’t change my hair styling process, works on straight or curly styles, and helps tame frizz.

how to use amika top gloss high shine spray

Unlike glosses or anti-humidity sprays, Top Gloss is super easy to use.

  • Hold 10 to 12 inches from dry hair and spray from mid-length to ends for the ultimate glossy look.

  • Use on dry hair only.

If you have fine hair that is easily weighed down, you might prefer spraying the mist on your hands and then running them through your hair. Focus on mid-lengths to ends.

is amika top gloss high shine spray worth it?

If you want glass-like shine and a little bit (not a lot) of frizz control, Top Gloss High Shine Spray is worth it. This is a finishing product that you use after you style, and a little goes a long way, so one bottle will last you a really long time.

It’s also really easy to use, and I reach for it more often than hair gloss or anti-humidity products because it takes less thought/ prep. I just spray it like hairspray for tons of shine and a more polished look (even with beach waves).

It’s true that using too much, or spraying it too close to your hair, can make your hair feel a little slick or greasy, but this is super easy to correct/ avoid.

If you want extreme frizz control, you will prefer something more heavy-duty like Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Shine Spray, but if you want a shine-enhancing product that doesn’t require a blow-out or force you to wear your hair straight, Top Gloss is an excellent product.

who it works best for

  • Frizzy, thick, or wavy hair

  • Those who want added shine

  • Those who want sleek, glass-like hair (think Cher or the Kardashians)

  • Those who live in (or are visiting) humid climates

who it might not work for

  • Ultra-fine hair

  • Flat hair that you’ve styled (ex: added curls)

  • Those who air-dry their hair and like a natural, semi-matte look

  • Those who prefer volume over sleekness or shine

amika top gloss high shine spray FAQ

is the amika top gloss hair shine spray good for fine hair?

Yes. I have fine, straight hair and Top Gloss adds shine without flattening my curls/ style. You really only need a little, though, so start with one or two light sprays (or spray into your hands first) and focus on the mid-lengths and ends.

can you use amika top gloss hair shine spray every day?

Yes. It's a finishing spray for dry, styled hair, (not a treatment or gloss) so you can use it whenever you want extra shine or need to smooth flyaways. That said, if you use it a few days in a row without washing your hair, your hair might feel a little greasy.

does amika top gloss hair shine spray make hair greasy?

Not when used sparingly. The lightweight formula is meant to add shine without feeling oily, but overapplying (especially on fine hair) can make your hair feel a little greasy or weighed down.

does amika top gloss hair shine spray help with frizz?

Yes. While it's mostly meant to be a shine spray, it does help smooth flyaways and reduce frizz more than I thought it would. Top Gloss is a really good finishing product for sleek styles, but if you live in a humid climate or your primary concern is frizz, check out Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Shine Spray.

can you use amika top gloss hair shine spray on color-treated hair?

Yes. This shine spray will make your color look super vibrant! It also won’t add a warm cast/ brassiness.

can you use hairspray with amika top gloss hair shine spray?

You can; it may be too much for fine hair, though. I recommend using hairspray first and then Top Gloss after.

can you go back and touch up your style after using amika top gloss hair shine spray?

Yes. I left my “after” photo above untouched to show you realistic results, but I’ve gone back and touched up my hair in other instances. You don’t lose any of the shine and my hair curled easily.
