Ouai Hair Gloss In-Shower Shine Treatment Review

I’m a genuine fan of Ouai, and was instantly curious when I saw that they carry their own Hair Gloss In-Shower Shine Treatment. I get my hair highlighted every 8-12 weeks, but I wash my hair daily and heat style it a few times a week, so I’m pretty harsh on my hair and am always looking for low-maintenance products that will revive my hair color, add shine, and make me look more polished.

The Ouai Hair Gloss In-Shower Shine Treatment is a 5-minute in-shower treatment meant to add hydration, softness, and shine while also providing heat protection. I’ve seen mixed reviews on it, so I was excited to try it for myself to see what it’s all about. After using the gloss for half a year, I’ve gotten to know it from the inside out and figured out the best tips and tricks to get the most out of it. For my full review and before and after results, keep reading.

ouai hair gloss in-shower shine treatment review

I personally loved the Ouai Hair Gloss In-Shower Shine Treatment and found it much easier to use than some of the other glosses I’ve tried. It made my hair shiny, soft, and gave my color a little boost in between appointments. It’s easy to use and only takes 5 minutes, which I appreciated. I’m all for taking care of myself and love beauty rituals, but want low-maintenance products that provide big results, and the Ouai Hair Gloss really nails it in that regard. I’ve used the gloss for about 6 months now, and find that it’s my secret weapon for special events or don’t have as much time to do my hair because it makes my hair shiny and hydrated, so I look (and feel) more put-together.

That being said, where I disagree with the brand a little bit is that I think you need to use conditioner before using this gloss. I have fine hair so per the brand’s instructions, I should skip conditioner and use the gloss after shampooing. When I did that, my hair tangled and felt really dry once I got out of the shower. I did notice shine and softness the next day, but the tangles weren’t worth it.

After experimenting, I found that using even just a little conditioner to make sure my hair was fully detangled after shampooing eliminated the entire issue and also made the gloss work that much better - my hair was even softer, shinier, and looked like I had my hair glossed at the salon. Even with fine hair, the combo of conditioner + gloss didn’t weigh my hair down, it wasn’t greasy, and I had great volume the next day.

I love that the gloss also offers heat protection; in a way, using a hot tool almost activates the gloss to work even more because your hair looks sleek and shinier.

Overall, the Ouai Hair Gloss In-Shower Shine Treatment has become one of my new favorite hair products. It’s easy to use if you use conditioner beforehand, adds shine and hydration, gives your color a boost, and makes your hair look like you stepped out of a salon for just $34. A little product goes a long way, and I’ve been using the gloss for months without making a dent in the bottle. As a low-maintenance beauty girl, this gloss makes me look and feel more put together without requiring lots of effort, so I highly recommend it.

pros

  • Makes your hair SO shiny

  • Makes your hair softer

  • Adds hydration back into your hair (via hyaluronic acid)

  • Provides heat protection (for the next day or two)

  • Safe for all hair types

  • Safe for highlights and color-treated hair

cons

  • Strong floral scent

  • Will make your hair greasy if you apply too much or to the top half of your hair

  • Not a conditioner replacement as advertised (in my experience)

  • Likely to cause tangles if you don’t use conditioner prior

  • Will weigh your hair down/ make it harder to hold a curl if you use too much product

how to use the ouai hair gloss in-shower shine treatment

  • Wash your hair like normal.

  • Apply conditioner and rinse out.

    • The brand says to skip conditioner if you have fine hair, but I found that I needed just a tiny bit of conditioner to make sure my hair was detangled for the gloss to really soak in and work its magic, so I recommend everyone use conditioner (but don’t overdo it or your hair will get weighed down).

  • Separate your hair into sections, then apply a pea sized amount of the gloss into each section from mid-length to ends.

    • Be mindful of not using too much! If you use too much, it will weigh your hair down and make it harder to heat style after.

  • Comb through your hair to ensure the gloss was applied evenly (you can use your hands).

  • Leave the gloss in for 5 minutes, and then rinse out.

  • For best results, heat style your hair.

  • The website says that the gloss lasts up to three washes, but I’ve found I get at least a week’s worth of shine out of it (and I wash my hair daily).

is the ouai hair gloss in-shower shine treatment worth the money?

Yes! The Ouai Hair Gloss In-Shower Shine Treatment is $34, which is cheaper than some of my other favorite glosses, and a little bit goes a long way, so it will last you a long time. Whether you have natural or color-treated hair, the gloss will make your hair pop and I overall looked more polished and put-together (even in workout clothes) as a result. The gloss adds a boost of hydration back into your hair which is necessary in the summer months (UV damage is so real), but it’s also a great way to give your hair extra shine for the holidays without having to schedule an extra appointment ($$$).

The Ouai Hair Gloss is an effective at-home treatment that also feels like self-care; I use it 1-2 a month, and it’s a ritual I really look forward to. It’s quick and easy to use and I feel an instant confidence boost anytime I use it. You can get it at Amazon, Target, Sephora, Ulta, or Revolve.

is the ouai hair gloss in-shower shine treatment safe for curly or coily hair?

Yes, it is. See it more as an add-on treatment and follow your regular hair routine (detangle, shampoo, conditioner), use the gloss for an extra boost of hydration and shine.
