The Best Nontoxic Beachy Candles
I’ve been obsessed with candles for as long as I can remember; they provide an extra touch that can make a house feel like a home, and create such a sense of intimacy and warmth when I’m hosting. I’ve also unfortunately dealt with migraines for years now, which have made me much more sensitive to fragrance over time. As much as I love candles, I have to be mindful about what I burn, since so many of them cause and amplify migraines for me. I’ve tried to do my research over the years regarding what is considered toxic vs non-toxic, but I recognize that the science is evolving and each person is unique. I believe our bodies keep score and speak to us clearly – what may be labeled “non-toxic” can still cause a migraine for me, so I try to listen to my body over any label. Below I’m sharing favorite beach-inspired candles that are mindfully made and do not give me any headaches.

My go-to candle brand anytime I want something summery, coastal, or beachy. Whether you want something crisp and fresh with ocean notes, or a candle that reminds you of coconut and citrus, Shore Soap Co. has mastered all summer scents. I was first introduced to the brand back in 2018 when I was visiting Rhode Island, and I’ve ordered from them at least twice a year ever since. Made in small batches with quality and personal health in mind, these candles have always burned clean and the owners have perfected the perfect balance of a scent that fills a room without overpowering it. My favorite candles that always bring me back to summers at the beach are Atlantic, Mermaid Kisses, Boardwalk, and Endless Summer.

While online shopping is the norm these days, I still prefer to test a candle in-store whenever I can, and I love that Sephora regularly introduces new fragrance brands to the store. This brand is certified clean by Sephora, and their candles are just as beautiful as their perfumes. Every candle by this brand is perfection, but I love their No.1 Scalpay candle even though it’s not as beachy as the others on my list. With notes of beach grass and lemon grass, it’s very fresh and light, and can be used year-round. Some of their candles also come in perfumes, so if you especially love a scent, you can wear it, too.

This candle is truly summer in a vessel. Light, fresh, and coastal, this smells exactly like the ocean without being too strong. Sometimes citrus notes can overpower, but I still pick up on the pepper and fir. I also love that this candle is made with beeswax and essential oils; the brand takes sustainability and clean ingredients really seriously; they’re probably the cleanest candle company I’ve found. It may not be as strong of a scent as you’re used to, but it’s worth it knowing the burn is so clean.

Made locally in San Diego, the “Beach Estate” candle from the Coastal Spring collection is quintessential beach vibes in a vessel, and the wooden wick reminds me of ending a beach day with a bonfire growing up. The citrus notes add a layer of freshness, but this isn’t too sweet and leans masculine – my boyfriend loves it and I think this is the perfect beach candle for hosting. I also love the owner of this small business - she puts so much attention to detail in everything she creates, and truly cares about every customer.
