Best Cool Toned Hair Products for Fine Hair
I’ve spent years navigating the tricky world of fine, cool-toned hair - and if you’re anything like me, you know how delicate that balance can be. Too much product weighs it down, but not enough leaves you battling brassy or yellow undertones. After years of trial and error, I’ve finally found the right haircare routine that keeps hair toned and vibrant without weighing down my fine hair. Below are my favorite cool-toned hair products that are gentle enough for fine hair, but powerful enough to keep your tone crisp and clean. Including everything from hydrating shampoos to toning conditioners and glow-enhancing treatments, these are the go-to essentials I rely on when I want to preserve my color and texture and extend the time between salon visits.
best cool toned hair products for fine hair
davines heart of glass shampoo
Contrary to popular belief, the Heart of Glass line is meant to brighten and enhance your hair color (not tone) so it’s my go-to for cool-toned hair. The silkening shampoo makes your blonde hair pop, adds lots of shine, and hydrates your hair, giving you salon-like results. The scent is floral/ powdery, but not so strong that it’ll turn you away from using it. They also have a rich conditioner and intense mask; I love and recommend both, but for budget purposes, the shampoo is what I recommend most if you have cool-toned, fine hair.
ouai detox shampoo
Incorporating a detox, or clarifying, shampoo into your routine is essential if you have cool-toned hair. It’s going to remove product build-up and give your scalp a good refresh. Most clarifying shampoos are incredibly drying, but the Ouai Detox Shampoo is my favorite out of all that I’ve tried. The formula is effective yet gentle, and it never dries out my scalp (even in the winter or dry climates). A little goes a long way, and it suds beautifully without stripping your hair of its natural oils.
You only need to use a clarifying shampoo every other week or so (depending on how much product you use, how often you wash your hair, how oily your scalp is, etc.) but I once tried using this product on back-to-back days for almost a week and it didn’t dry my hair out at all! So I feel really confident recommending this for all hair types, especially fine hair. Every day use is extreme and not necessary; ideally I use this shampoo every 10 days (as someone who washes her hair daily), but unless you have an oily scalp or a lot of product build-up, every 2 weeks would work.
unite hair blonda toning shampoo
Most purple shampoo is too harsh on fine hair, but this one from Unite is a miracle in a bottle. It makes your hair perfectly cool-toned without staining your scalp purple, eliminates all brass, and leaves your hair insanely shiny and soft. I use this every week to 10 days because I wash my hair daily, but I’d recommend every other week if you only wash your hair a few times a week.
kristin ess purple conditioner
Keeping your hair cool-toned can be expensive when you factor in salon visits, products, and maintenance, but just because a product is expensive doesn’t make it automatically good. I really like the Kristin Ess line as a budget-friendly option for color-treated hair. The purple conditioner tones your hair just enough to look bright and refreshed without leaving a purple stain or drying out your hair. The scent isn’t my favorite, but it’s subtle, and I love that it’s so convenient to find this product, because it’s sold at Target.
davines nounou conditioner
I love using NouNou as my daily/ non-toning conditioner. It’s hydrating, helps reduce damage, and is deeply nourishing without weighing fine hair down. It’s color-safe, which is why you see so many salons carry Davines products. The scent is really fresh (a hint of tomato) rather than overly sweet or musky, so it’s ideal if you’re sensitive to fragrance like I am. No matter how many conditioners I try, I always come back to this one and wonder why I switched it up in the first place - it’s really that good.
ouai fine to medium hair treatment masque
Applying a mask every few weeks is key if you have color-treated hair. It’s going to give your hair a boost of hydration, shine, and help reduce breakage and tangles. This one by Ouai is specifically formulated for fine to medium hair, so it does not weigh your hair down or leave a film while providing noticeable hydration and shine. The scent isn’t overpowering, and I like that you don’t need to leave it in for a long time in order to see the benefits; I typically only leave it in for about two minutes max because I’m impatient. This brand is great about running sales; you can subscribe on Amazon for a discount, too.
oribe mirror rinse glass hair treatment
Full disclosure: this Oribe treatment is pricey ($64 - ouch), but SO worth it because a little goes a long way, so one bottle will last you forever. This is the product I credit with helping me extend the time between salon visits. It’s the best gloss for cool-toned, fine hair; it makes your hair shine like glass, adds hydration, and really brightens your color. Anytime I use this, I get compliments and asked where I get my hair done - which, yes, all credit to my hair dresser, but it’s also a testament to how worth it this at-home treatment is.
kevin murphy cool angel
Similar to Oribe, this is a great at-home treatment that provides almost identical results. The scent is too floral for my liking, but it’s super easy to use, noticeably cools the tone of your hair, and makes your hair feel SO soft. I use this every few weeks, but you could probably use it every other week if you want extra-cool-toned hair.
unite hair 7SECONDS detangler leave-in conditioner
I like that this product works as a detangler, leave-in conditioner, and heat protectant so you get multiple uses out of one product. The scent is so fresh and lightweight, and the hydration really makes my hair shine without weighing it down or leaving a film. This is going to make your hair soft and silky, protect your color from heat damage, and make your hair feel like you just had a salon treatment.
oribe dry texturizing spray
I am insanely picky when it comes to hairspray; I’d rather skip it altogether than use something that feels like a compromise. This Oribe spray is 100% worth the money and is the only hairspray I’ll use on my fine hair. It helps your style hold without weighing your hair down or leaving a sticky residue, adds just enough volume, and doesn’t make your hair feel greasy. The scent is light, which I prefer as someone who is sensitive to fragrance, and it doesn’t add brassiness to cool-toned hair.
kevin murphy shimmer me blonde
Totally not necessary, but if you want your cool-hair toned to really pop (like for photos or a special event) this finishing spray is gorgeous. I don’t love the floral scent, but it will add a beautiful, polished shine to your hair. I use this as a topper after hairspray and while the results are too subtle for me to recommend this for daily use, I do like it for special event photos.
super goop sunscreen
UV rays from the sun don’t just damage skin; they can also cause your hair color to fade and weaken your hair. Protect your scalp and fine hair by using sunscreen (or wearing a hat whenever you can). A lot of scalp-specific sunscreens either don’t work, leave a white-cast, or damage your color. This one from SuperGoop is the only one I’ve found that actually works yet doesn’t damage my hair. My scalp never burns now (thank goodness), and it doesn’t affect the tone of my hair, so I find it to be safe for cool-toned blondes. It’s also extremely lightweight, so it won’t weigh down fine hair.
slip silk scrunchies
Keeping your fine hair cool-toned can be a little harsh, so what you use in-between styling is arguably just as important. silk scrunchies were a little scammy, but they’re 100% worth the investment. Normal hair ties can cause breakage, damage your hair, and are really rough on your hair in general. Silk scrunchies prevent creases, keep your hair hydrated, and eliminate frizz, particularly if you’re someone who puts your hair up periodically throughout the day.
I worried that I’d lose them like I do with normal hair ties and end up wasting the money, but something about knowing I spent more makes me keep track of them better - I’ve never lost one. (Don’t ask about my friends stealing mine; that’s a different conversation haha).
