Davines Liquid Luster Review

I’m always trying out new hair products and looking for the best, low-maintenance options that provide results and are truly worth the money. My hair stylist recently introduced me to the Davines Liquid Luster, which is marketed as a weightless treatment that adds instant shine and softness.

As someone with lots of highlights and color-treated hair, I spend a lot of time combating brassiness. I also tend to envy the shine that comes with a rich, darker hair color. Davines Liquid Luster is a non-tinted hair gloss that instantly adds shine, giving your hair a glass-like look without harming your highlights or natural hair color, so I was definitely excited to try it out.

Keep reading for tips to use it, pros, cons, my before and after results, if I think it’s worth it, and a cheaper dupe that is more budget-friendly.

how to use davines liquid luster

You use this on freshly washed hair. Before you start, keep in mind that Liquid Luster has a watery consistency that is much thinner than a shampoo (which is typically gel-like). TO avoid wasting product, I recommend pre-measuring out how much you need and putting it in a small bowl so that you don’t have to worry about using too much or too little, or spilling in the shower.

  • Use 1 dose (20ml) for short hair and 2 doses (40ml) for long hair. The bottle is labeled; no need to break out measuring cups.

  • After you shampoo, squeeze out the extra water from your hair.

  • Section your hair. I like to do horizontal sections (top, middle, bottom) because I have layers, but you might find it easier to do vertical sections (left, middle, right).

    • Make sure your hair is tangle-free; this makes it much easier to apply the gloss.

  • Apply Liquid Luster from mid-lengths to ends. Make sure to fully saturate your hair.

  • Comb through to ensure your hair is evenly coated; I use my hands rather than an actual comb.

  • Rinse out; you do not need to let it sit for it to work.

    • Make sure to rinse thoroughly; your hair may feel greasy if not.

  • If you have thick or dry hair, follow-up with conditioner. I have fine hair and skip this step.

how often can you use davines liquid luster?

You can use Davines Oi Liquid Luster weekly, but I’ve found that my hair stays shiny for close to two weeks (not one) so you can stretch the time a little bit.

It’s an expensive gloss, so to save money, I only like to do it once in between salon visits. My stylist says that you can use this the next time you shampoo after you get your hair colored, though, since it is color-safe.

pros

  • Makes your hair noticeably shinier

  • Adds a gorgeous sheen so your color pops (natural or color-treated)

  • Adds softness

  • You can wash it out immediately, so it’s perfect if you don’t have a lot of time

  • Color-safe

  • Doesn’t weigh down your hair

  • Lightweight formula

cons

  • Expensive at $57 per bottle

  • Not the kind of product where you can use less than the intended amount

  • Strong, polarizing scent (you’ll love or hate it)

  • Watery formula can be hard to use

  • If you use too much, your hair may feel greasy or weighed down

is davines liquid luster worth it?

If your goal is instant shine, Davines Oi Liquid Luster is worth checking out. It’s lightweight, works on all hair types, and delivers salon-like shine without adding a ton of steps to your haircare routine.

Formulated with roucou oil, this gloss doesn’t just add shine; it also strengthens and protects hair with beta-carotene and antioxidants.

That said, it’s definitely one of the more expensive hair glosses on the market and depending on how long your hair is, you might not get many uses out of it. There are 300 total ml in the bottle, and the directions say to use 20ml for short hair and 40ml for long hair – so you’ll get approximately 15 uses out of the bottle for short hair and 7 uses for long hair if you follow the recommended amounts.

I also don’t love the Oi scent; it’s masculine, sharp, and strong, so if you are sensitive to fragrance, you may prefer something a little more subtle or warm.

Overall, this gloss is an occasional treat (especially because it’s $57) rather than a weekly non-negotiable when it comes to my haircare routine. I love it for special events, the holiday season when I’m socializing frequently and want to look my best, and when I need to take pictures, but for just adding shine in between hair appointments, I stick with a cheaper alternative.

davines oi liquid luster dupe

Davines Oi Liquid Luster is one of the more expensive hair glosses that I’ve tried. While I still haven’t found a drugstore gloss that I love, I have found one mid-priced gloss that also delivers quick, noticeable. If you don’t love the Davines Oi scent, you may want to try this dupe out!

If I had to pick one gloss that I’d recommend for all hair types, the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask would be the one. My friends with thick hair love this just as much as I do, and it delivers glossy shine on all hair colors - from pastel to blonde to natural; it’s like the gloss version of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Priced fairly at $32, it only needs to be left in for 60 seconds and delivers salon-like shine while smelling incredible (Amika’s signature scent is an amber vanilla - not too sweet, not too earthy). If you want to try a hair gloss but also need deep conditioning, this is the one to try. For tips on using plus my result photos, check out my Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask Review.
