Is Color Wow Dream Coat Worth it?

Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is one of the most viral anti-frizz products, but it’s also technique-specific and requires a learning curve to truly get all of the good benefits.

As someone who prefers low-maintenance beauty, I will say that Dream Coat is one of the few high-maintenance products I actually think is worth the money. That said, it’s not a universal, foolproof product. It’s amazing for some people, but I can see how it’s disappointing for others. Because there’s nothing worse than buying a hair product that leaves you frustrated and feeling like you wasted your money, I wanted to put together this guide that explains exactly when Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is (and isn’t) worth it.

This isn’t sponsored; Color Wow does not know who I am haha. I have bought and paid for every single hair product on this website myself :)

is color wow dream coat worth it? who should (and shouldn’t) buy it

what dream coat actually does

Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray uses heat-activated polymers to create a lightweight, invisible shield over your hair. This repels humidity, smooths/ seals the cuticle, and gives you sleek, shiny hair.

This analogy may seem strange, but Dream Coat essentially acts like a raincoat (or umbrella) for your hair, helping prevent frizz even in super-humid conditions. The caveat here is you have to use it correctly in order to get results. It isn’t like other hair products where if you use it kind of right, you get some results; it really is an “all or nothing” product.

pros: why it is worth it

long-lasting results

Unlike most styling products, results last through 3–4 washes. So while it is high maintenance initially, it allows you to be more low maintenance throughout the week. That’s part of why I love traveling with Dream Coat. Even if I’m not going somewhere humid, Dream Coat makes my hair look sleek, polished, and put together, especially since my hair doesn’t always react well to hotel water.

Dream Coat is also fairly priced when you look at the cost up-front, but when you factor in the long-lasting results, it becomes much more cost-effective over time, too.

extremely lightweight

I have fine hair that gets weighed down really easily, so I’m picky about leave-in products. Dream Coat is truly ultra-lightweight and feels like nothing on your hair. It’s non-sticky, non-greasy, and is ideal if you hate heavy products or the feel of having anything in your hair.

I was initially worried that it would be too much for my hair, especially since you have to really coat your hair for it to work, but Dream Coat feels invisible on your hair.

strong humidity protection

The biggest selling point of Dream Coat is arguably its ability to protect your hair against humidity and eliminate all frizz.

If you struggle with puffy, frizzy hair that’s hard to manage (especially in humid climate) you will notice a big difference in your hair once you start using Dream Coat.

I have friends in New York who struggle with their hair in the summertime especially, and Dream Coat has become their staple product. You do more up-front as far as styling goes, but then your hair is good to go for a few washes, which is ideal in the hot summer months when you don’t want to do a whole lot to your hair.

gives hair that glass-like, ultra-shiny finish

If you want Kim Kardashian shiny, glass-like hair (initially made famous by Cher), then Dream Coat is the product for you. When applied correctly, it makes your hair SO shiny and gives you a smooth, sleek finish. Your hair looks polished and like you got a blowout at the salon, and I always get compliments anytime I use it.

cons: why it might not be worth it

technique-dependent

Dream Coat is unfortunately one of those hair products that requires precise application in order for it to work; if not, it won’t really feel like it did anything on your hair.

You must blow-dry your hair with tension in order to activate the unique proprietary anti-humidity complex that forms a waterproof shield that protects against humidity. You cannot air-dry, and if you don’t apply tension, your hair won’t seal properly.

It’s more work up front, especially if you always air-dry like me, but it is worth it in the long run.

Need extra guidance on the technique? Check out my Dream Coat Review or trouble-shooting guide, Why Color Wow Dream Coat isn’t Working for more step-by-step help.

not ideal for air-drying

If you air dry your hair or don’t style with heat, Dream Coat isn’t the product for you.

Instead, stick to an anti-frizz leave-in treatment and finish off with a smoothing oil for similar (yet more subtle) results.

not strong enough for all hair types

Dream Coat is a mostly universal product, but if you have very dry, curly, or coarse hair may do better with the Extra Strength Dream Coat formula. My mom has thick, wiry grey hair and loves the extra strength version. can feel like it’s “doing nothing”

Because Dream Coat is essentially weightless, some people expect more immediate results. This is sometimes due to user error, so make sure you are following all of the steps (heat + tension), or check out my troubleshooting guide for more specific help.

who dream coat is best for

Color Wow Dream Coat works best for fine to medium hair that experiences slight to moderate frizz. It’s also the perfect product if you live in a humid climate and feel like your hair is fighting it every day.

I also recommend Dream Coat for those who love a good blowout or sleek, polished look.

who should skip it

Color Wow Dream Coat is not for you if you air dry your hair or prefer low-maintenance routines. It’s also not ideal if you like lived-in beach waves (like the Olsen twins) or big, voluminous curls.

Also, if you have very dry or coarse hair, skip Dream Coat and instead get the Extra Strength, which is specifically formulated for thick, coarse, curly, coily, and very dry/ damaged hair.

I share more on how the Extra Strength formula differs from the OG Dream Coat in my Dream Coat vs Extra Strength comparison guide.

is color wow dream coat worth it?

Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is worth it if you want long-lasting frizz control and are willing to master the heat under tension technique.

Dream Coat offers intense humidity protection, allows for lower-maintenance styling for 3-4 washes, and gives you sleek, shiny hair that looks more polished and put together.

There is a learning curve, but it’s not too hard to master; I personally found it much harder to learn how to use wave spray on my straight hair or how to use a crimper without looking bad.

That said, skip Dream Coat if you want instant results, never use heat to style your hair, or prefer a simple routine. If you swear by beach waves and big, voluminous curls, you won’t love Dream Coat - opt for a shine-enhancing, frizz-smoothing oil instead (though it doesn’t give you the same vibrant, luminous results).
