Oceanside Travel Guide
Oceanside has truly received a makeover the last few years. While it may have a reputation for being a military town, it’s also become home to incredible restaurants, welcoming fitness studios, and cozy coffee shops, with so much more to see and do. As I’ve become somewhat of a local to this beach city over the last year, I’ve compiled the best of the best into a travel guide that will help you make the best of your time in Oceanside.

best time of year to visit Oceanside, California
If you want warm weather and sunny skies, the best time to visit Oceanside is actually in the fall – September and October are the most ideal months. We get a lot of “May grey” and “June gloom” during the early summer months, and the temperature usually stays around the 70s, with a bit of a breeze and marine layer in the evenings. You’ll not only beat the summer crowds and get perfect beach-day weather if you visit in September or October, but you’re also more likely to save money with off-season discounts, too.
where to stay in Oceanside
Mission Pacific - Luxurious and relaxing; it’s hard to not enjoy your stay here. A little more refined for couples whereas The Seabird is more family-friendly.
The Seabird Oceanside Resort and Spa – Perfect for families, this is a straight-forward yet upscale Hyatt hotel with basic amenities and two pools. Within walking distance of almost everything, most rooms offer at least partial ocean views.
The Fin – Cute, recently remodeled boutique hotel right in the heart of downtown so you’re in walking distance of the pier, restaurants, and the beach. This is a Hilton hotel so you may be able to use points/ connect your account for added deals.
The Brick Hotel – Boutique hotel with self-check-in (no front desk). Very modern, don’t miss their rooftop yoga session. They offer group, military, and extended stay discounts.
The Green Room – Hidden gem that’s within walking distance of local attractions, the rooms are on the smaller side but hotel is overall very quiet and clean.
things to see and do in Oceanside
Top Gun House - Historic landmark; this served as the backdrop for one of the scenes in the original Top Gun movie. The house has since been restored and is decorated with lots of film references and memorabilia, including a replica of the Kawasaki that Tom Cruise rides in the OG movie. Also the pies are actually quite good.
California Surf Museum - Interactive mix of art, science, and photography. Well done, but you can move through it quickly (like an hour tops). One of the most notable exhibits is dedicated to Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm to a shark attack in 2003.
Walk The Strand - Ideal way to spend an afternoon, the pathway is fully paved and safe (though you will need to keep an eye out for skateboarders and bikes). Anyone could comfortably walk this; it’s more accessible than the wooden pier.
Bike and Surrey rentals - If you’d rather ride than walk, you can rent bikes, surreys (that seat up to 6), or e-bikes. Prices are fair, and they’re kid-friendly. Learn more here.
Oceanside Morning and Sunset Markets - Live like a local and experience tons of food trucks, local artisans, and more. Every Thursday from 9am to 1pm and 5-9pm in the heart of downtown.
Learn to surf - Oceanside Surf School instructors are knowledgable, helpful, and make sure you actually have fun throughout the entire lesson. Catch them at Tyson Park (“208 South The Strand” if you want to put it in your Maps app), or visit their Instagram for more information.
Whale Watching - Tours are typically 2 hours long and should be booked in advance; odds are actually good that you’ll see whales or dolphins.
Oceanside Museum of Art - The range of exhibits is impressive and thoughtfully curated, especially since the space is small.
best beaches in Oceanside
Pier View South Beach - Popular beach spot; typically the most crowded and family-friendly. Metered parking, street parking, and paid lots. Central location, so it’s near restaurants, bathrooms, a playground, and showers.
Pier View North Beach - A little less crowded than the south side; waves can be strong for surf. Llifeguards on site in the summer.
Buccaneer Beach - Quieter, smaller beach, so it can fill up quickly. Amenities include bathrooms, and showers. Located across the street from a park with a playground/ cafe. Free lot plus street parking.
Wisconsin Park Beach - Local spot; more popular for surfing, as the beach disappears at high tide, but lifeguards are there during the summer. Street parking.
Harbor Beach - Great for families and spending the full day at the beach. Amenities include restrooms, showers, picnic areas, volleyball courts, and fire pits. Near the harbor restaurants, paid parking lots.
Breakwater Bay Beach - Strong surf spot; quieter and less crowded, but not ideal for casual swimming. Street parking.
where to eat in Oceanside
coffee shops
1022 Cafe & Gelateria - My favorite; this spot has a friendly, old-school neighborhood vibe I miss. No tips here; everything is already factored in. PS: try the gelato! I’ve gone her for coffee and ended up having the gelato for breakfast some mornings; it’s that good.
Vigilante Coffee - A busier shop, but there’s lots of indoor/ outdoor seating. The prices are fair, and while the service is sometimes slow, the drinks are always high-quality.
Communal - The most “aesthetic” coffee shop in Oceanside, and the coffee is even better. The tables have QR codes so you don’t have to lose your seat to order.
Revolution Roasters - They make their milks in-house, which is nice since so many of the store-bought alternatives are full of unnecessary ingredients. Late mornings are typically their busiest, but the line moves fast.
Parlour Donuts - Located right by the pier, I recommend the donuts more than the coffee. Seating is minimal, but you can order ahead online or through their app, which is helpful during peak tourist season.
High Tide Coffee Co - Perfect if you have kids, there’s a play kitchen inside as well as a little play area outside. I prefer their chai when it’s iced instead of hot; skip the food.
The Cup Coffee - Open late (until 10pm), so go here if you want to grab a coffee or tea while you walk the Strand and watch the sunset. Plenty of indoor/ outdoor seating and the food is good, too.
breakfast and brunch
Don’s Country Kitchen - Best breakfast in town. Attentive service, portions are huge, and it’s a hearty breakfast that will keep you full for hours. The parking lot is tiny and kinda brutal; I recommend street parking and then walking a block or two to the restaurant instead.
Beach Break Cafe - Classic breakfast diner just blocks from the beach. Great service, incredible food. Order a coffee cake for the table (or yourself); it’s delicious.
Come on Over Cafe - Hidden gem. Located in an industrial area, so it’s a drive but worth it. Impeccable service, and their sandwiches are rightfully top-ranked on Yelp.
Bread and Cheese Sandwich Shop - The curveball spot you’ll end up raving about. The garlic tots are unique, but somehow work. They’ve nailed the perfect texture and taste for their sandwiches and burritos, and the frappes are light but still satisfy your sweet tooth. More of a grab-and-go vibe.
Stratford at the Harbor - Small spot on the harbor that can get noisy; order at the counter then seat yourself. Line moves quick, and the food is fresh and fairly portioned.
High/ Low - Pricey and service can be hit or miss, so I recommend going on a weekday. Elevated menu; go here if you want a boozy brunch.
O’Side Strand Cafe - Hidden order-up food truck in the corner of Tyson Park, yet within steps of the beach. Ideal if you want something quick; their smoothies, waffles, and sandwiches are fantastic.
Petite Madeline Bakery - Their croissants and coffee are my favorite; the rest of the menu is good, but won’t “wow” you. Dated interior, but centrally located in the heart of downtown.
Blue Bowl Superfoods - Best acai shop in Oceanside because there’s tons of base/ topping options (plus it’s fixed pricing so you don’t pay for extra toppings). The staff is super helpful.
lunch and dinner
Evaga - Best Mexican food in Oceanside. A little out of the way and a hidden gem I almost want to keep a local’s secret, but so good I have to share it with you. Everything is authentic and tortillas are made in-house; skip the tourist traps and go here.
Local Tap House (LTH) - Excellent food and a lively atmosphere (can get loud). Elevated American menu that has something for everyone; the short rib sandwich is a local favorite.
Tanner’s Prime Burgers - Rightfully on the Michelin Guide (no star yet), these smash burgers are high-quality and thoughtfully made. Worth the wait, and the staff has it down to a science to keep things moving quickly. I recommend coming earlier in the day to avoid super long lines, especially if you have young children. Also, get the shake - it’s made with Dutch cocoa and small-batch; truly so good and rich without being overdone.
The Plot - Vegan hotspot that every foodie will love (even if you’re not vegan). Warm atmosphere, genuine service, and the food is so good it feels more like an experience than a meal. They have a garden on-site and everything is scratch-made; you really can taste the difference. Open daily, but closed from 3-4PM to prepare for dinner service.
allmine - Low-key, scratch-made Italian spot. First class service; I love to come here for date night or with family. Smaller portions, but they’ll fill you up.
Wench and Rodent Seabasstropub - Best sushi spot in Oceanside; fish is fresh, service is attentive, and they have vegan options.
Craft Coast Beer & Tacos - Beloved favorite by locals and tourists alike. Can get crowded, but things move quickly. Fresh, authentic tacos and the outside seating provides prime people watching. Get the birria tacos!
Odie’s Pizza Co - Great pizza; you can taste a difference with the sourdough crust (which is made with organic, unbleached, unenriched flour). I recommend going for their lunch special M-F (2 slices or slice/ salad + drink for around $10) if you can. Gluten free options available, and the ranch is worth the hype.
Cosmos Burger - Kinda similar to In-N-Out; the burgers are and there’s rarely a long wait. Go here if you like truffle as they have both a truffle burger and truffle fries.
Eat Crispy Burger - Newer smash burger spot, their food can be a little salty but I love that they fry their thick-cut fries/ onion rings in avocado oil. If you’re a sauce person, go here because their’s are really good.
Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen - A little pricey, but the elevated Southern food is consistently good; get the deviled eggs and save room for dessert. Open late but kitchen closes at 9PM (10PM Fri/Sat).
333 Pacific - It doesn’t look special from the outside, but if you want a fancier steak dinner, go here as it’s definitely one of the higher-end restaurants in Oceanside with private dining options. I recommend making a reservation and requesting a table with a view with a can; you can also spring for the romance upgrade which decorates the table with rose petals for an additional cost. Open for lunch, but more of a dinner spot.
The Shore Room Bar - Limited menu; relaxing, upscale (but not stuffy) vibe. Nice if the drink is just as important as the meal, but you won’t see locals here too often.
dessert
Little Fox Cups + Cones - Not walkable from the beach, but worth the short drive. Artisanal, unique flavors and plus classics like ice cream tacos (aka their version of the Chocotacos we loved growing up). Line moves really fast, with minimal outdoor seating only. Vegan options available!
The Famous High Pie at the Top Gun House - The Top Gun house is already a popular tourist destination, but don’t sleep on the pies they sell inside. They’re a fun, cheap treat (3 for $9) and a nice change from ice cream. Skip the dipping sauces, but if you really want to try, lemon curd is the best flavor.
1022 Cafe & Gelateria - Best gelato you’ll ever have (unless you go to Italy, probably). The servers will let you try every flavor (they encourage it); I recommend the pistachio and tropical sorbet most.
Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream - A chain but worth mentioning because the flavors rotate a lot, including vegan/ dairy-free options. Get the 4-scoop sampler, which is a better deal and lets you try different flavors. Favorite flavors - Oreo Cheesecake, Blue Monster, Coconut Caramel Delight, Monkey Business, and Chocoholic Chunk for the dark chocolate lovers.
Fugu Ice Cream & Taiyaki - Service isn’t great, but it’s a fun, unique dessert. The taiyaki (a popular Japanese fish-shaped cake) is like a softer waffle cone, and it’s really good with the Nutella filling and vanilla ice cream. They also serve rolled ice cream - s’mores is yummy, but not overly sweet.
late night and drinks
Mission Ave Bar and Grill - One of the few restaurants open late (1AM daily). Known for their extensive whiskey selection, the food is also tasty but a little pricey.
The Rooftop Bar - Open til 10PM (12AM Fri/ Sat), but I recommend timing your visit to watch the sunset, instead. Cocktails, mocktails, and small plates.
The Space Pad - Futuristic cocktail lounge with a fun, unique vibe. Located inside Killowatt Brewing, it’s super tiny so make reservations ahead of time.
Frankie’s - Purely a bar (no food), this place feels modern yet old school at the same time. Located in the heart of downtown; open til 12AM daily.
The Shore Room Bar - Go here for a relaxing nightcap; chill vibe, not nightlife. Open til 10PM, 11PM Fri/ Sat.
Pour House - Laidback, local bar with live music; food is eh. Open til 2AM daily.
Masters Kitchen and Cocktail - Delicious food, and they’re fantastic with larger parties. They should be open til 10PM Wed- Sat, but they sometimes close early, so you have to check prior.
restaurants with a view in oceanside
The Rooftop Bar - Gorgeous view of the sunset and the pier; can get crowded on summer nights (quality goes down a little, too). Go here for drinks and small plates while you watch the sunset, then have a full dinner elsewhere.
Stratford at the Harbor - Best view of the harbor, but only open for breakfast/ lunch. Laidback; you order at the counter then seat yourself.
333 Pacific - Upscale dinner spot that’s fully enclosed (no patio), but has a view of the ocean/ pier. Try to request a table with a view as not every spot in the restaurant has one.
The Shore Room Bar - Thoughtfully crafted cocktails and mocktails; limited food menu. You get a view of the beach/ partial pier and are on an elevated patio, but there’s lots of foot traffic on the sidewalk in front of you, so it doesn’t feel super private. Prime people watching, though.
best shopping in Oceanside
Oceanside isn’t known as a shopping destination, but there are lots of hidden gems and cute boutiques so don’t get distracted by the tourist shops. Whether you’re looking for a souvenir that doesn’t feel touristy or something for yourself, here are the best places to check out:
Brixton – Excellent mens section; they frequently run sales, so if you’re a fan of this brand, definitely stop by.
The Ozone Shop – Located right by the pier; excellent, modern clothing for the whole family, accessories, and an elevated home decor section.
Get Back Necklaces – Family-owned indie brand is known for creating unique jewelry that honors the traditions of St. Christopher, who is known as the protector of travel. Most pieces are under $20, and they make for perfect souvenirs that aren’t too touristy.
Zito Hat Co - Handcrafted hats that are fully customized to your preferences and unique sizing. If you want a unique souvenir, this place can’t be beat.
best fitness studios and workouts in Oceanside
Therapy Social Fitness Studio – Welcoming boutique studio that offers barre, ballet, TRX, and strength class, plus a really fun HIIT-style bounce class that you do on a trampoline. Advance reservations required.
Pier View Yoga – Most mornings at 9AM on the cross streets of Tyson Street and Pacific Street, so you get a beautiful view of the beach. Restorative and easy to follow. You must sign up online and sign a waiver ahead of time.
Lagree + Versa Fit – Popular spot so classes fill quickly, but they also have a cold plunge and sauna. Arrive 15 minutes early to get acquainted with the studio, and don’t forget grip socks.
Verve Studio – Go-to spin studio in Oceanside; the energy is unmatched and it’s absolutely beginner-friendly. Only downside is they’re limited to just a few morning classes on weekends.
Black Sheep Yoga Studio – Simple studio that also incorporates sound baths, meditation, and reiki into some of their classes. I love their gentle and yin and yang classes.
