One of the biggest advantages of Petco Park is that it’s right in the heart of downtown San Diego. Unlike other baseball stadiums, you can walk out of Petco Park and directly to a plethora of restaurants, bars, and casual chains no matter what you’re craving.

Even though there’s tons of great food at Petco Park, you can typically find more variety, cheaper prices, and arguably better food just steps away in Gaslamp Quarter. So whether you want a delicious meal before or after a game, these are the best places to eat near Petco Park.

While I highly recommend the short rib birria nachos at Puesto inside Petco Park, if you’re in the mood for tacos, you’ll find the best places outside of the stadium.

Tacos el Gordo - Always busy and a little chaotic to order; go here if you want adobada, but if you want a mix of tacos, I recommend The Waves instead. Never not crowded, but there’s additional upstairs seating (just behind the salsa bar).

The Waves Taco Club - #1 spot for fish tacos/ surf and turf burritos as well as vegetarian options (plus everything else, honestly). I usually side-eye places that charge for chips, but their food is so good that they get away with it. Don’t skip the pistachio crushed churros!

Taco Centro - You order at the counter and then seat yourself. The salsa bar is one of the best, and although the tacos are made fresh, they’re not always served hot. That being said, highly recommend the hot churros - sometimes we stop here just for dessert.

La Puerta - If you want Mexican food but prefer table service, go here, although it’s definitely still a bar environment. I recommend the mix-and-match street tacos, but you can’t go wrong with an order of carne asada fries for the table, either.

Lucky’s Lunch Counter - Traditional diner-style brunch spot right by Petco Park. Ideal if you want a no-fuss breakfast, or have a few picky eaters in the mix (you can build your own burrito or salad, or opt for cereal). Indoor seating is just at the counter, but there are normal tables (with big umbrellas) outside.

Ale Tales Taproom - Gastropub with a beer, wine, and cider taproom. Clean and modern with friendly staff that treats you like family; definitely a favorite spot among locals. Get the pizza rolls and chicken tenders; they’re really, really good.

Storyhouse Spirits - If the food is just as important as the beer, go here. They’re a distillery rather than a brewery, but there’s something for everyone on their menu. Indoor and outdoor seating. You can’t go wrong with their crunchwrap or a pizza for the table.

The Melt - Classic American food with a modern twist. I love their shakes, especially since they don’t serve anything with high-fructose corn syrup or preservatives/ artificial colors. There’s a kid’s menu, and while they don’t reinvent the wheel, it’s a solid spot if you’re in the mood for a good burger.

Cloud 9 Deli - Tons of hot/ cold sandwiches and deli staples plus a full kid’s menu - truly something for everyone. You order then seat yourself, so it’s no frills but they’re open from 8AM - 8PM (except Sundays), so plan to go before the game, not after.

TNT Pizza - Dive vibe; there’s seating, but it’s easier to grab a slice and go. Vegan options (including deep-dish); the pickle slice is surprisingly delicious. Service can be slow/ a little hit or miss.

Houston TX Hot Chicken - A chain, but they have the best chicken sandwich in Gaslamp. However, when they say hot, they mean hot, so talk to the server before ordering!

where to pregame before a padres game

Happy Does - Food and drink deals; this is a fun, social bar with games, etc. so it’s ideal for groups or socializing in an upbeat environment before home games.

The Blind Burro - They have good deals (like a beer/ tequila shot combo), but it’s more low-key than Bub’s. You can get food here, but I prefer other taco spots.

Bub’s at the Ballpark - Known as the true tailgate spot, not the happy hour spot, if that makes sense. Packed with fans, it’s loud and a little frat-like, but if you want the game-day comradery, this is the spot.

barleymash - Traditional American food in a bar setting located in the heart of Gaslamp just a few blocks from the stadium. Loved by locals and tourists alike, there’s always people here but it never feels too crowded. Bourbon-BBQ burger is a 10/10 and the fries are perfectly seasoned.

6th and G Breakfast Co. - If you’re an early bird, this is the best breakfast in Gaslamp. This has the aesthetic you want in a downtown spot plus great food, attentive service, and isn’t too expensive. Even if you prefer a savory breakfast, the waffle pop sampler is a must-have.

Union Kitchen and Tap Gaslamp - Modern yet rustic with a new American-style menu. It’s not my favorite, but if you want a mellower sit-down vibe, this does the job.

Water Grill - Upscale seafood restaurant with gorgeous open-window seating. This is where I take my parents, but they also have a kid’s menu and ample space for large groups. The fish is fresh; they’re known to update the menu daily.

Mimoza Mediterranean Restaurant - Modern Turkish menu, warm atmosphere, attentive service. The other Gaslamp Mediterranean restaurant (Mezé) is more about drinks/ the nightlife atmosphere; this where you go for a delicious meal.

Werewolf - Dive bar vibes but they have amazing food, too. I can’t go downtown and not stop by here; get the Werewolf nugs (order them sticky) and waterfront sliders. If you are going from the game to a night out, this is the ideal place to start as they also offer karaoke so it’s a fun, “going out” vibe without being pretentious.

La Puerta - Quality food for before the game, but also has that bar vibe for a little bit of an afterparty, too.

Prince St. Pizza - Open super late (like 3AM or so), so if you need a late-night slice, go here.

Tacos el Gordo - Always crowded but a Gaslamp staple. Go here if you want adobada. If not, skip it as the crowds can be too much.

Taco Centro - The other late-night taco spot, and I love that you can get churros for dessert (they’re made fresh and you can taste a difference). Counter-style ordering, plus an iPad if you want something truly quick and informal.

The cost of food purchased at Petco Park adds up quickly, so while there are many incredible vendors worth checking out, there are just as many great restaurants located just steps away in the heart of Gaslamp.

As someone who hated bringing a sack lunch to field trips, I totally wanted to roll my eyes at the idea of eating before a Padre game, especially since Petco is partially known for their food scene. That said, Gaslamp Quarter has really stepped it up and you can get better quality and more variety for cheaper, leaving you with a little more wiggle room in your budget.

If you want the best of both worlds (downtown eats and ballpark specialties), here’s my go-to game plan (no pun intended) that helps me have a little bit of everything.

eat a full meal in gaslamp prior to the game.

Not only is this the cheaper option, it’s also going to help you out if you plan on drinking throughout the day.

do your pregame drinking in gaslamp.

The markup on alcohol (all drinks, honestly) is wild at every stadium, and Petco Park is no exception. Keep in mind you can bring an unopened water bottle with you to enter the stadium to save money, but if you’re on a budget, get your pregame drink before you get into the stadium, then save your money for the specialty food.

The best deal for alcohol is probably at The Blind Burro, though the service can be iffy. And be mindful to not overdo it, or you can be denied entry before the game even begins.
