Petco Park Seating Guide

Petco Park is known as America’s Finest Ballpark not just because of its location and walkability, but because it’s hard to find a bad seat amongst the 40,000+ options. Some sections are ideal for the views, whereas others allow you to bring the whole family for a budget-friendly activity. Every level also has unique food worth trying, so while you can’t pick a “bad” seat, the “best” seat depends on what your priority is and what you want to experience the most.

As a local who’s sat in almost every section of the park, I’ve created this guide that breaks down seating options by shade, views, and value to help you figure out where you should sit.

PS: Keep in mind that Petco Park calls the 200-level the “Terrace Level” so you will see the two used interchangeably; they mean the same thing.

For a quick sheet, here’s where you’ll want to sit depending on your priority:

• Best for shade - 3rd base side; also the back rows (think 8 and back, so that you are under the overhangs)

• Best for views - Field level behind home plate or 200-level infield

• Best for value (views without the home plate price) - 200-level Terrace

• Best budget seats - 300-level

• Best for socializing - Gallagher Square

Fun fact: every seat is angled towards home plate, and the stadium was designed with the goal of giving every seat a great view. It’s no secret that the closer you are to the field, the better your view will be, so choosing a field-level seat will give you a great view.

That said, my personal recommendation is to go up a level instead of farther back in row. I have found that Section 202, Row 2 gives you a better view than Section 118, Row 40.

• Field level behind home plate - closest and most detailed; you can see most plays very well

• 200-level infield - best overall perspective of the field and park; also tends to be cheaper than field-level

what to avoid

• Deep outfield corners (limited angles)

• Very low rows (can flatten your view)

Personal note: I actually liked sitting in section 124 (Row 23). You don’t get the most detailed view of home plate, but it’s pretty balanced as far as getting to see action in the infield and outfield. You’re also close to the home run/ foul ball area so it’s kind of the best of both worlds, or at least more balanced than you’d expect.

If you want a great experience without breaking the budget or overspending, check out the lower rows of the 200 or 300 sections. Tickets are fairly priced (200s or budget-friendly (300s) yet don’t feel like you’re missing out.

top picks

• Terrace level (200s) - best balance of price and view; you can see the game and feel like you’re part of the action, but they’re noticeably cheaper than the 100s.

  • Also worth noting: the seats are padded and you’re able to order food/ drinks to be delivered to your seat.

• 300-level (near home plate) - cheapest with good angle; you feel like you’re above the action, but you can’t beat the view for the price, especially when you’re on a budget.

  • If I had to decide, I’d pick Section 300 Row 8 over Section 217, Row 4.

Sitting at these higher levels gives you an elevated view and better visibility of the game, and you save quite a bit of money compared to the premium seats.

Just a note: if you are afraid of heights, the 300s might feel really high for you (it did for me initially). Petco Park adds steepness to ensure every seat gets a good view, but I always need to hold onto the railing when I sit that high.

If you’re going more for the vibe than the game, you don’t want to miss Gallagher Square or the outfield. Here’s the rundown:

This newer section is all about the social environment. With lawn seating instead of assigned seats, you’ll need to bring a blanket to sit on (no lawn chairs allowed). Be ready to watch the game on the big screen; die-hard baseball fans might not love it.

Gallagher Square is worth it if you are in a big group and want to chat; it’s much easier for everyone to talk versus taking up a whole row inside the stadium. It’s also nice if you have kids who like to run around during the game; there’s a sand box, kids play catch all game, and there’s a playground with the World’s Tallest Climbable Bat.

Overall, the vibe is informal, social, and fun.

outfield sections

The outfield is underrated in my opinion. The crowd is more energetic, and you’re close to the home run action, which is arguably the most exciting part of the baseball game. You obviously don’t get the best view of the infield, but you’re still a part of the action and will have more fun than you anticipated.

Section 124 gives you lots of shade and a nice breeze, plus a view of some of the home runs without paying a ton.

where to sit

• 3rd base side (all levels)

• Back rows of sections

• 200-level under the overhang (rows 8 and back)

• Upper deck (more consistent shade, plus the daytime breeze and better airflow)

what to avoid

• 1st base side (direct sun, especially early on)

• Lower rows with no overhead coverage. Section 207, Row 3 had me baking for the entire game (1:10pm start time).

best all-around seat

If you want one safe, well-rounded option, the not-so-secret formula is the 200-level, 3rd base side, mid-to-upper rows. You get shade plus a great angle and view for a good price. The most balanced seat in the stadium, I’ve never heard anyone complain while sitting there.

Overall, here’s my little cheat sheet when picking your seat:

• For the best views - Field level

• For a balance between view and budget - Terrace level (200s)

  • You also get in-seat food delivery and padded seats.

• For the cheapest seats - 300-level or Gallagher Square

• For a social experience - Gallagher Square

• To be closest to the most food options - 100s

• For shade on day games - third base side, back rows (8 and back)
