Best Seats for Shade at Petco Park
If you’re going to a day game at Petco Park, shade matters more than you think. San Diego is known for gorgeous weather, but spending 2.5+ hours in the hot sun catches up to you and can make for a completely different experience depending on where you sit.
First things first: Petco Park is an outdoor stadium with no roof, and the San Diego sun is no joke, so picking a seat based on shade matters more than people expect! Home plate faces north, meaning the sun rises on the 1st base side (east) and sets on the left field, 3rd base side (west).
If that is a little too techncial for you, below I share exactly where to sit at Petco Park for seats in the shade, plus tips to keep in mind while picking your seat.
best seats for shade at petco park
If you want the quick answer, the best shaded seats are on the third base side. You get the most shade in the 200 and 300 sections, especially if you sit in the back rows (27 and back).
The first base side has the most sun, and the higher up you go, the less likely you are to get any shade at all. If you sit in Section 327 on a sunny day, you’ll face the sun for pretty much the whole game.
why the 3rd base side has more shade
At Petco Park, the sun moves across the stadium in a way that favors the third base side. These seats get shade earlier in the game and more protection in the afternoon games.
Better for long-term comfort, if shade is your priority, stay on the 3rd base side.
best sections for shade
200-level (terrace, 3rd base side)
Out of all the sections at Petco Park, this is one of the best combinations for shade and view on day games. The overhang provides extra coverage, and you get a great view without having to spend too much.
You really get the best value out of these seats when you factor in shade, view, comfort, and vibe.
300-level (upper deck, back rows)
If shade is your top priority but you still need to shade on budget, these sections give you the highest chance of full shade. You also get the ocean breeze up here, so it’s cooler overall.
As someone who doesn’t love heights, the upper deck can sometimes feel too high, but it’s an underrated section when it comes to hot day games in the summer.
field level (back rows, 3rd base side)
These are premium seats that keep you close to the action, but still allow for some shade. You start with at least partial shade, and it increases as the game goes on. I’ve sat in Section 118, Row 28, Seats 3-4 on a day game and while there was a little sun at the beginning, it wasn’t too hot and we had great views of the field.
seats to avoid for sun exposure
If you don’t want to sit in direct sun, avoid:
The first base side (especially during early innings), especially the upper deck (300s)
Outfield seats during day games
Lower rows without overhead coverage
These areas get the most direct sunlight and you really feel the heat early on. They’re not unbearable during May or June for gloomy games, but in the summer, they can be tough. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a sealed water bottle!
tips to stay in the shade
Search for the Petco Park shade map as you buy your tickets for a section-by-section breakdown, but in general:
Choose seats in the back half of sections. The closer your row is to the field, the more likely you are to be in the sun.
Look for overhang coverage, as that provides shade (typically the middle to back rows of the section).
Opt for later game times when possible. If you are anti-summer and hate the sun or heat, you may prefer an evening game!
Bring sunglasses, extra sunscreen, and a sealed water bottle. You will want to reapply sunscreen during the game, especially in July/ August.
is shade worth prioritizing at padres games?
For day games, yes, it’s absolutely worth prioritizing shade.
Even if the temperature is mid 70s, the sun really cranks it up a notch and it’s easy to end up hot, tired, and exhausted by the end of the game. I’m not saying that sitting in the sun is a total dealbreaker (I’ve done it a few times), but walking back to the shade feels instantly 5-10 degrees cooler, so whenever I can, I pick a shaded seat.
When you go to book your tickets, remember this:
Best overall shade - 200-level, 3rd base side
Best budget shade - 300-level back rows
Best premium shade - Field level, 3rd base side (higher rows)
Picking a section - “Even is cool, Odd is cruel.”
If you’re going to a day game at Petco Park, choosing shade can make or break your experience. Stick the shady seats and enjoy the game!
