There are a few different ways to get to Petco Park. Taking the trolley is recommended; not only do you avoid traffic, but it’s cheaper and relatively stress-free.
That said, I personally drive to the game more often than not. If you also plan to drive, I highly recommend buying your parking in advance.
Game-day traffic and parking prices can vary significantly depending on the opponent, day of the week, and start time.

One of the best things about Petco Park is that there really isn’t a bad seat. A little fun fact for you is that all seats are angled towards home plate, so you don’t have to worry about turning your neck all game.
Overall, though, the best section depends on your priorities. This can include proximity to the field, premium amenities (like in-seat food delivery) views, budget, and/ or shade (ideal for day games).

Unlike many stadiums that focus primarily on traditional ballpark food, Petco Park features local San Diego restaurants and unique menu items throughout the park. No exaggerating, we have tried it all at this point. Some would say it’s a local perk, but the truth is that I want to use the convenience of being a local to help fans and visitors get the best experience possible. Fortunately, Petco Park allows some outside food and beverages under specific guidelines.

Absolutely. Gallagher Square is one of Petco Park's most unique features, and there’s something for all ages. Even if you have an in-stadium seat, you can still walk around and won’t want to miss it! Key amenities include a playground, slides, sand pits, social gathering areas, food/ drink vendors, and an open green space. This is where larger groups can socialize the easiest; it’s also great for kids to play and run around throughout the game.

tips for kids at Petco Park
Complimentary admission is provided to children under 36” in height as long as they are accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. Because you’re not buying them a ticket, the child must sit in your lap. Buy a separate ticket if they’d rather sit next to you.
Strollers are allowed, but typically need to be stored at the Guest Service Center.
Baseballs and baseball mitts are allowed. Even if your kid swears they don’t want to try to catch a ball, pack it just in case - I’ve seen so many kids say they wish they brought theirs because they see the other kids and feel left out.
There’s a kids ballpark and playground at Gallagher Square.
If your kids are not interested in watching the game, you might prefer to sit in Gallagher Square, where it’s more picnic-style (bring blankets to sit on; hardback chairs aren’t allowed).
There are kid-specific giveaway promotions; book your tickets for those days (or for all-ages giveaways) if you can, since you’ll get a free souvenir right when you get in and can avoid having to buy something from the team store.
My go-to recommendation for a kid snack is Mister Softee Ice Cream in a helmet. It’s a simple treat and the helmet doubles as a souvenir.

This is my most-asked question as a local. Even my friends that have been to countless games haven’t done all the tours, so I decided to take one for the team (no pun intended) and take ALL the tours to share exactly what is (and isn’t worth it).
If you're visiting San Diego during the offseason or simply want a behind-the-scenes look at the stadium, a Petco Park tour can be a great addition to your trip, but not all tours are the same! The tours currently offered that I’ve taken and talked about are the:
Before you book, keep in mind that a game at Petco Park already feels like a full day, especially if you get there early to explore and eat prior to the first pitch. Taking a tour adds on another 1.5-2 hours to your day and depending on your travel time to/ from the stadium, it can be too much for some.
Generally, I recommend skipping it if you have kids unless they are die-hard baseball fans. Just get there early and walk around for a little self-guided tour. If you are a local, I’ve found that the Daily Tour shares the most information (and takes you to the most exclusive areas) and is a fun way to spend a non-game day in downtown.

how early should i arrive at petco park?
Gates open 90 minutes before the first pitch. Depending on how much time you want to walk around or eat before, I recommend arriving 60–90 minutes before first pitch to explore the stadium and avoid rushing through security.
For traffic-heavy games like Opening Day or rivalry games, the earlier you arrive, the better!
is petco park worth visiting?
Absolutely. Even non-baseball fans often consider it one of San Diego's best attractions.
what should i bring to petco park?
First things first: download the Ballpark App before you go - you need this to download your tickets/ get into the park, and can also use it for mobile ordering from your seat. Also:
Bring cards, not cash - Petco Park is 100% cashless and only accepts credit/ debit cards or Apple/ Google Pay and Google Pay, including at the team store.
Bring a plastic, unopened water bottle - even if you don’t think you’ll drink it, it’s much better to hold onto than spend $4-5 on a water bottle there (trust me).
You can bring food, but it should be wrapped or in a container and for individual consumption - think individual pizza, not XL for the group.
If you’re attending a giveaway game, I recommend bringing a foldable bag that fits in the stadium-size clear bag. Once you get in the stadium, you can pull the larger bag out and use it to keep your giveaway safe (without having to carry it around everywhere).
is petco park lax about the bag policy?
No. There’s no uniformity, either - sometimes a bag will work, sometimes it won’t (even if it’s already been approved before). And just because it’s been a giveaway bag before doesn’t mean it’ll be let in - you have to stick to the rule of clear plastic bags not exceeding 12” X 6” X 12” or clutches/ purses no larger than 5” X 7”. Grocery bags are no longer approved.
Bags I’ve bought that consistently get allowed in without fuss:
Crossbody bag - fits two water bottles, sunglasses, a portable phone charger, wallet, keys, and hand sanitizer comfortably. The detachable strap is also thick and comfy!
Backpack - largest option that fits pretty much everything (takeout food, water bottle, reusable bottle, jacket, sunscreen, portable charger, etc.)
A little bag policy hack: Bring a foldable bag and keep it in your pocket or stadium-size clear bag as you enter Petco. Once you get in the stadium, you can then use it - not exactly the best way to follow the rules, but I’ve never had security stop me or try to confiscate it.
