Petco Park Bag Policy (What You Can and Can’t Bring)

If you’re heading to Petco Park for a San Diego Padres game, knowing what you can and can’t bring is essential. Bag policies, food rules, and drink restrictions can catch people off guard, and the last thing you want is to be turned away at the gate. Every stadium is different, and in my experience, I’ve had a bag work at Petco Park one time and then not the next. After trial and error, here is everything you need to know about the Petco Park bag policy before you go.

PS: I am not a Petco Park spokesperson or official; please refer to their website for the most up-to-date information. I am simply sharing what has worked for me and what I’ve learned over the years.

petco park bag policy (what you can and can’t bring)

For a quick answer:

  • Small bags are allowed (with size limits).

    • Non-clear bag dimensions: 5” x 7”

    • Clear bag dimensions: 12” X 6” X 12”

  • Backpacks and large bags are restricted.

    • I have used this clear backpack without issue. It fits the requirements but still feels roomy! Holds 2 water bottles (including a 24oz Owala, jacket, snacks, etc.)

  • Non-clear diaper bags are allowed; they are subject to additional screening.

  • Food is allowed (within guidelines).

  • Individual sealed water bottles are allowed.

  • All bags are subject to security screening.

    • As I mentioned, it’s up to that security person’s discretion. I have had a bag be okay one time and then not the next. All the bags I have linked below have a 100% approval rate.

Policies can change slightly, but this is the general rule set to follow.

what bags are allowed at petco park?

You can bring:

  • Small purses, clutches, or fanny bags that do not exceed 5” x 7”

  • Clear bags that do not exceed 12” X 6” X 12”

    • My favorite clear bags:

      • This clear bag is my go-to. It fits two waters, a portable phone charger, lip balm, hand sanitizer, my wallet, and keys with a little wiggle room. The detachable strap is thick and comfy. It’s on the smaller side but works with most stadiums, not just Petco Park.

      • This bag is similar to the bag above but is taller rather than wider.

      • This crossbody bag is a little cuter, while still fitting the not-so-cute “clear” requirement. It’s taller but not as wide; ideal if I don’t have to carry in someone else’s water, sunglasses, etc.

      • This backpack is ideal if I’m carrying stuff for two people (or bringing my own food into the stadium). It fits all the essentials, plus two waters, a takeout container, and a beanie or sweatshirt. Plus, the straps are padded so it won’t hurt your neck or shoulders.

You cannot bring:

  • Large backpacks

  • Oversized bags

  • Luggage or hard coolers

  • Grocery bags

If your bag is too large, you may be denied entry, so it’s best to go minimal.

can you bring food into petco park?

Yes, you can bring food into the stadium. That said, the caveat here is that it should be for personal consumption. Think snacks, sandwiches, a burger, etc.

Avoid large quantities or bulk items. AKA you can bring in a personal small pizza, not an XL for the group.

can you bring water into petco park?

Yes, but there are restrictions.

  • The plastic bottled water must be sealed and unopened.

  • Reusable bottles may be allowed if they’re empty.

  • Alcohol and outside drinks are not allowed.

what to bring to petco park

As I mentioned, you can bring your own food and sealed water bottle into Petco Park. A few other essentials I always keep with me:

  • Portable phone charger

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Electrolyte pouch for day games

  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses for day games

  • Lip balm (bonus points if it has SPF)

  • Hair tie

  • Ear protection for young children and babies!! Petco gets LOUD; please bring this.

I also bring a few band-aids and ibuprofen because I am prone to migraines. This is just my personal preference; there are first aid responders around who will help you if you need a band-aid or medical help.

prohibited items at petco park

Avoid bringing:

  • Alcohol

  • Flavored drinks, juices, coffees, teas, etc.

  • Glass containers (even if it’s a water bottle)

  • Hard coolers

  • Large bags or backpacks

  • Anything that could disrupt the game

Security is strict, especially since it is common for most games to sell out and reach max capacity at this point.

tips for getting through security faster

There’s no bigger than missing the first pitch because you have to get re-checked by security. To avoid getting held up:

  • Bring the smallest bag possible.

  • Have items ready for inspection.

  • Keep it minimal; avoid bringing unnecessary extras.

  • Arrive early to avoid long lines.

  • When it doubt, bring less. I promise you will be too busy having fun to miss the random “should I bring this?” items.

  • Stick to a sealed water bottle or empty reusable water bottle.

  • Bring your own snacks if you want to save money.

  • If you are worried about what to carry your souvenirs home in:

    • They typically give you a bag when you check out.

    • I have brought a folded up reusable bag for giveaway/ theme game days; I just roll it up and place it inside my clear bag, then take it out after I get through security. That said, there is a chance security may stop you to inspect if they see it. I’m sharing my experience, not an amendment to the rule.

The simpler you pack, the easier your entry will be. And remember, this is for everyone’s benefit and safety, so while it may seem inconvenient, the purpose is for 40,000+ people to enjoy the game.
