Is Gallagher Square Worth It? What to Know Before You Go at Petco Park
If you’re going to a San Diego Padres game at Petco Park, you’ve probably seen tickets for Gallagher Square and wondered if they’re actually worth it. The seats don’t look bad on TV, everyone seems to enjoy it, and they’re also a great budget-friendly way to make it to a chronically sold-out Padre game.
Because Gallagher Square is less about traditional seating, the open-space vibe is a lot more casual and social. For some people, it’s one of the best areas in the stadium. For others, it’s not ideal at all, so it may (or may not) be worth it depending on what kind of game experience you want.
I’ve sat all around Petco Park and gone to games solo, with friends, the kids in my family, and for date night. Below I’m sharing exactly what to expect with Gallagher Square and how it compares to the in-stadium seats so you can decide if it’s right for you.
is gallagher square worth it?
what is gallagher square?
Gallagher Square is the large grassy area beyond the outfield at Petco Park. Instead of standard stadium seats, you’ll find:
Open lawn seating
Standing areas
Picnic-style hangout space
Large video board to watch the game
A sandpit for kids, plus a playground featuring the “World’s Tallest Climbable Bat.”
It’s specifically designed to feel more relaxed, informal, and social compared to traditional sections and assigned seating.
pros of gallagher square
more space and freedom to move
Unlike regular seats, you’re not stuck in one spot. You can sit on the grass, walk around, or stand and socialize freely. One of the most flexible areas in the stadium, it’s ideal if you are in a group or want to do more than just watch the game. If you hate having to squeeze past people in traditional seating, this is way better.
When it comes to Gallagher Square, it’s more about the atmosphere than the view.
cheaper tickets
As sell-outs become the norm, ticket prices continue to rise at Petco Park.
Gallagher Square is usually one of the most affordable ways to watch a Padres game nowadays. If you want a ticket for under $50 and a little more wiggle room in your budget for food or drinks, this is the way to go.
Just a note, though: sometimes the 300s sections are cheaper than Gallagher Square, especially if you’re looking at the official retailer site (SeatGeek). So if you are looking for the cheapest options, check both sections!
great for groups
If you’re headed to the game with friends, this is one of the best spots in the stadium. You don’t have to worry about who sits on the end and communicating across the row, since it’s all free seating. Gallagher Square feels more like a park hangout or social event than sitting quietly watching the game.
When it comes to in-stadium seats, I typically recommend stacking 2-3 people across two rows instead of sitting in a row of 6 for better socializing, but if you want something no-fuss and to avoid the headache of coordinating seats, the informality of Gallagher Square is definitely appealing. Plus, all tickets cost the same amount, so it’s a little easier to budget (and include everyone).
good for kids
Sometimes event spaces that claim to be appropriate all-ages actually aren’t, but in many ways, Gallagher Square is a kids’ paradise. There’s plenty of room to move around, the grass encourages play (it’s not uncommon to see kids playing catch throughout the game), and there’s a sandbox or two (plus a playground) for littles to enjoy. If you’re worried your kids won’t sit still for nine innings, Gallagher Square is worth checking out.
And while you will see adults drinking, I’ve found that families congregate by each other as do the adults, so it’s very friendly for everyone.
cons of gallagher square
not the best view of the game
This is the biggest drawback of Gallagher Square. You’re far from the field, so you miss out on the details and traditional viewing. You rely on the big screen, and it doesn’t feel like you’re at a baseball game the way it does when you sit in the lower levels of the stadium. If you’re a serious baseball fan, you might end up disappointed.
Note: people walk (and kids play) in front of the screen all game long. It’s not the type of thing where the screen is blocked off during innings. The screen is elevated which helps, but Gallagher Square is not for die-hard fans who want to dissect every pitch.
no assigned seating
There are no reserved seats, so you need to arrive early for a good spot, especially if you’re part of a larger group. Space fills up quickly, so get there early if you want to sit on a grassy area (versus concrete ledge).
You cannot bring beach/ camping chairs, so bring a blanket or two to sit on. Night games are prone to the marine layer so sitting directly on the grass may feel damp.
less “classic baseball” experience
If you’re looking for a traditional stadium feel where you can watch the pitch closely, Gallagher Square is not for you. At its core, it’s more about socializing than baseball. Casual fans may feel like they’re still at a baseball game, but if you want to watch the game in real life, not on a screen, opt for a normal seat.
gets crowded
They don’t oversell Gallagher Square, but it can still feel crowded and a little more rowdy than you expect with traditional baseball seating. Demographically, it also leans more family-populated than other areas of the stadium.
no shade
You may get lucky later in the day when the sun sets behind other buildings, but overall, Gallagher Square doesn’t have much shade. It’s also a “rain or shine” space, meaning you won’t be relocated to other seats should it start to rain. Fortunately, rain is rare in San Diego!
is gallagher square worth it?
Honestly, it depends. If you are a true baseball fan and you want to see every pitch, you won’t love it.
Gallagher Square isn’t about having the best seat in the house; it’s about having one of the most relaxed and social experiences at Petco Park. If you go in expecting a fun, flexible, hangout-style game day that doesn’t break the budget and an imperfect view (or watching most of the game on the big screen), it’s worth it.
who gallagher square is best for
Gallagher Square is worth it if you:
Care more about the experience than the game itself
Want a budget-friendly ticket
Are going with a group of friends
Prefer a casual, social atmosphere
Are going with kids that want to move around or won’t sit still for 9 innings
Can sit on the grass comfortably for 9 innings
Don’t mind being around those who care more about socializing than the game
Don’t mind it getting crowded
who should skip it
You might want to choose a different section or traditional seating if you:
Want a clear, close-up view of the field
Prefer an assigned seat
Plan to watch every inning closely
Struggle to sit on the ground for 2+ hours
Are going to the game for a more traditional baseball experience
Are going alone
Don’t want to be around kids
Will get frustrated by people standing/ walking/ playing in front of the screen all game long
Lastly, if you’re in a smaller group (2-4 people), you could totally enjoy Gallagher Square, but if I’m going with my boyfriend, mom, on a double date, or with 1-2 friends, traditional seating is my personal preference.
tips for gallagher square
If you decide to sit in Gallagher Square, here are my top tips to make the most of your experience:
Arrive early to claim a good spot.
Bring something to sit on, especially if you’re going to a game in May or June (gloomy weather = damp grass) or at night. I recommend a thick blanket folded for added cushion. You cannot bring lawn/ camp/ beach chairs.
I recommend every person bring a blanket ie. if you are sitting with someone, bring two blankets so that you have an extra layer in case the grass is damp. Going alone? You can easily fold your blanket in half for extra thickness.
Bring a jacket! For some reason I find that Gallagher Square gets extra chilly at night.
Use the area as as a “home base.“ Try to walk around the stadium for more of a baseball vibe, or to catch an inning on the ramp/ behind traditional seats.
Make a game plan regarding food (Petco Park is known for its food). There are vendors at Gallagher Square, but some of the best are at the Mercado (section 104ish). Check out my Best Food at Petco Park guide for more tips.
