Best Time to Visit the San Diego Safari Park
One of the top tourist attractions of San Diego, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a can’t-miss experience for travelers and locals alike. With some of the rarest animals and plants in the world on display, it’s worth the trek to inland Escondido and one of my favorite ways to spend the day!
That said, timing your visit is key. Unlike the San Diego Zoo, the Safari Park is located in an inland valley around 30-40 minutes from downtown. While San Diego is known for having a mild climate, the Safari Park’s inland location definitely affects the weather and is something you must plan for, especially if you want to see the animals when they’re most active.
As a local (and a zoo member), I’ve visited the Safari Park throughout the years and seasons figure out what different months offer. If you're visiting for the first time or returning to see what’s new (like the incredible Elephant Valley), when you visit can make a huge difference in your experience. Below, I share all my advice and best recommendations for when you should plan to visit the San Diego Safari Park.
best time to visit the san diego safari park (month-by-month guide)
While I share month-by-month recommendations below, I want to start this guide a little more literally with the time of day you get to the Safari Park.
The best time to arrive is when the Safari Park opens. Firstly, the majority of the animals are most active during the mornings (when temperatures are cooler) and late afternoons. Getting to the Safari Park right as it opens means you get to see the animals when they’re most engaged; crowds aren’t as heavy, so the popular exhibits are easier to navigate, too.
You’ll also have an easier time parking and avoiding traffic by getting there early.
best time for animal activity
early morning or late afternoon
As I mentioned, the animals are most active in the early mornings and late afternoons. The inland location of the San Diego Safari Park means that the days get hot quickly, and because most of the exhibits are oversized to mimic “real-life” conditions, it can be hard to spot certain animals (like the rhinos) as they search for shade during the middle of the day.
Personally, I always make it a priority to head straight to Walkabout Australia right when the park opens. That’s the highest point of the Safari Park, and it can feel strenuous getting there if you save it for mid-day. Also, the wallabies love their mid-day naps. The rare albino wallaby, Everest, is most active in the morning, so if seeing him is on your bucket list, plan for an early morning!
I’ve shared my full San Diego Safari Park One-Day Itinerary that shares how I recommend planning your day. It factors in weather, shade, and when the animals are most active, without you having to zigzag or retrace your steps.
best months to visit
spring (march–may)
Spring is one of the best, most underrated times to visit the San Diego Zoo. Temperatures are comfortable, the gardens are at their most vibrant, and crowds are generally manageable outside of spring break periods. Spring is also baby season; anytime I visit in late May there are new baby animals to spot!
Weather wise, May in San Diego is known for its gloominess, also known as “May grey.” The animals love it and are most active, so I always try to visit at least once in May. Tourists planning their San Diego vacation don’t always realize that it will be more gloomy than sunny in May (and June); it’s not ideal for beach days, but makes for an extra-special time at the Safari Park.
summer (june–august)
For those who plan to visit in the summer, I recommend early to mid-June if possible. June gloom continues from the May grey, so weather is still cooler (and occasionally misty), so the animals are more active in early June than they are in late August.
If you plan to visit mid-June through August, expect hot weather and larger crowds, especially on weekends. The Safari Park usually closes earlier (around 4PM), so arrive right when the park opens to get the most out of your day.
While the animals are least active during the afternoons because the weather is hot, the Safari Park has a splash pad near Lion Camp that kids love! It’s a nice way to cool down after spending the day walking around, so bring a change of clothes.
To make the most of your summertime visit, bring lots of water, have the map downloaded to your phone, and follow an itinerary! And if you plan to eat at Mkutano House (the only sit-down restaurant), make your reservation in advance! It is new so demand is high; I recommend reserving at least a week or two in advance.
fall (september–november)
Fall is a great time to visit the Safari Park. Temperatures remain warm but summer crowds begin to decline, so the park is less crowded than during peak vacation months.
During the month of October, kids 11 and under receive free admission to the Safari Park! You will either want to visit for the discount, or avoid it because it’s a little more crowded.
winter (december–february)
Winter is a hit-or-miss season for the Safari Park; I recommend timing your visit carefully. The holiday season brings about larger crowds, especially as the park puts on a few holiday events. Expect large crowds close to Christmas and New Year’s.
That said, not every winter day is busy. If you’re looking for a quieter visit, non-holiday weekdays are ideal; crowds are lighter and the weather is cool (but not freezing), so the animals are active and you feel comfortable walking around.
I especially recommend visiting in January or February. Most people are back to school/ work, and the weather is mild throughout the day. Check the forecast if you’re visiting in February; that tends to be the rainiest month. On the plus side, the animals love it, but plan ahead and bring an umbrella and/or raincoat!
best day of the week
I find that planning the day of the week that you visit the Safari Park isn’t as important as it is with the San Diego Zoo; the inland location makes it a little less crowded overall.
That said, the best days of the week to visit the Safari Park are on weekdays, ideally Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Weekends aren’t unbearable, but overall, the vibe on a weekday is a little more relaxed and as such, the animals are more likely to be active.
Whenever you can, avoid holiday weekends, as that’s when the Safari Park is most crowded.
when is the safari park most crowded?
The San Diego Safari Park tends to be the busiest during:
Summer vacation (June through August)
Spring break weeks (early April through mid-May)
Thanksgiving week
Christmas and New Year's week
All holiday weekends (workers have told me Memorial Day is always packed)
October - kids 11 and under get free admission
For the lightest crowds, choose a weekday outside of major school breaks. There may still be a few field trips roaming around during your visit, but they typically leave around lunchtime and the Safari Park is great about not overbooking them.
weather considerations
While it’s always gorgeous in San Diego, the San Diego Safari Park is located inland in Escondido and that affects the weather way more than it may seem. It gets very hot during the summer, and you don’t have the benefit of the coastal breeze that you get with the San Diego Zoo.
As such, weather plays a larger role at the Safari Park than at many other San Diego attractions. If you're visiting during warmer months, arrive early, wear sun protection, and plan for plenty of walking. Whenever possible, time your visit for the cooler months or on a cloudy or mildly overcast day; the animals are more active and you’ll be more comfortable. worst times to visit
While you can’t really have a bad time at the San Diego Safari Park, weather and crowd size can impact the quality of your visit. Avoid visiting on a holiday weekend or during hot summer days. Remember that the Safari Park closes early in the summer, so if you plan to visit during the summer months, arrive early!
The animals are most active on cool, cloudy days, so visiting in May or June (during the gloomy season) is ideal.
my recommendation
For the best overall experience, visit on a weekday in April, May, or November. Arrive right when the zoo opens, and check out my One-Day Itinerary to see exactly how I navigate the park to see as many animals as I can when they’re most active and before the day gets too hot.
Visiting in the springtime or late fall means you’ll enjoy comfortable weather and fewer crowds, plus some of the best opportunities to see the animals active throughout the day.
