Ouai Hair Oil Review

Even though I have fine hair that gets weighed down easily, I’m obsessed with hair oil. It’s one of the few products that adds a visual boost while also nourishing your hair, and can make any hairstyle feel a little more polished and put together.

That said, finding a hair oil that adds shine without making your hair greasy can be surprisingly difficult. Some formulas are too heavy for fine hair, while others seem to just sit on the hair without making much of a difference.

I’m a fan of Ouai in general, but I’ve heard mixed reviews on their hair oil. Designed to smooth flyaways, add shine, seal split ends, and protect hair from heat styling - all without weighing it down - this hair oil seems to do it all, but I wanted to see how well it actually delivered on its promises.

Below, I share my full review of the Ouai Hair Oil with before and after results, tips for using, an ingredient breakdown, and if it’s worth buying.

ouai hair oil review

The Ouai Hair Oil is a lightweight finishing and styling oil that reduces frizz, adds shine, and provides heat protection, which prevents further damage.

Unlike heavier oils that are meant to deeply condition hair overnight, this one is designed for everyday styling. It almost feels slick in your hands, but is easy to work into both dry and damp hair.

Many hair oils leave a noticeable coating on the hair, especially if you have fine hair. This one spreads easily between your hands and absorbs quickly without making your hair feel oily. That said, if you use too much, it will make your hair feel greasy and will start to sit on your hair a little bit.

I like that it doubles as a heat protectant, so you get multiple benefits from just one product, which also helps you save money in the long run. The fragrance is floral (true to Ouai’s branding) and is feminine yet soft; I typically don’t like floral fragrances but this is one of my favorites.

Overall, the Ouai Hair Oil noticeably smoothed my frizz and made my hair look more polished, even with curls. My hair looked brighter yet it didn’t leave a warm finish, so it’d be safe for bright blondes to use, too. My mom has thick, wiry grey hair and also loves this oil.

pros

  • Lightweight formula

  • Adds lots of glass-like shine

  • Smooths frizz and flyaways

  • Helps seal the appearance of split ends

  • Provides heat and UV protection

  • Can be used on damp or dry hair

  • Only a small amount is needed so one bottle will last a long time (that’s why I buy the travel size; the big bottle will expire before I use it all)

cons

  • A little pricey for a hair oil

  • Floral fragrance is strong and not for everyone

  • Not as nourishing or deeply hydrating as other hair oils

  • Doesn't replace a bond repair treatment or deep conditioning mask

  • Using too much will make your hair feel greasy

ouai hair oil before and after

Even though I have fine hair, I applied the Ouai Hair Oil on damp and dry hair in order to show the range of results. I struggle with lots of frizz and flyaways at the root, so I applied the tiniest amount to my hair while it was damp in order to help reduce frizz. I then let my hair air dry (as I always do) and heat styled with a curling iron; the oil provides heat protection so you can skip that step if you use a different product.

After styling, I added another half-pump from mid-lengths to ends to add shine. I like to create beach waves, but as you can see, my hair was still a little more polished and put together (but not greasy) as a result of using this oil.

how to use ouai hair oil

The versatility is one of this product's biggest strengths, as you can apply it on damp or dry hair for less frizz, more shine, and a polished look.

on damp hair

When you apply the Ouai Hair Oil on damp hair, you get the benefit of heat protection as well as less frizz and improved manageability. To use:

  • Start with one pump.

  • Apply from the eye-line down focusing on mid-lengths and ends.

  • Comb through hair and style as usual (including heat styling).

If you have medium to thick hair, you can apply another pump if needed.

on dry hair

For dry hair, the Ouai Hair Oil is best seen as a finishing step to smooth flyaways and add glass-like shine. To use:

  • Start with one pump.

  • Warm it into your hands slightly.

  • Smooth into hair from eye-line down, focusing on mid-lengths and ends.

Avoid applying it directly to your roots, especially if you have fine hair. If you need to, start with the mid-lengths and then use whatever is leftover on your hands at the root.

key ingredients

One of the main reasons this oil feels lighter than many traditional hair oils is that it combines nourishing botanical oils with conditioning silicones that help smooth the hair cuticle. Key ingredients include:

  • Ama Oil - penetrates and addresses damaged hair fibers while shielding the hair from humidity

  • Borage Oil - smooths and reduces the appearance of frizz

  • Baobab Seed Oil - hydrates and smooths dry hair

  • African Galanga Root Extract - protects color-treated hair from fading and color degradation

texture

One of the downsides of online research is that you don’t get the best ideal of how a product actually feels until you go into the store and try it in-person. The best way that I can describe the Ouai Hair Oil for you is that it is silky and lightweight rather than thick or sticky.

It glides easily and doesn’t leave behind a heavy residue; it’s feels more slick than nourishing.

For most hair types, one pump is enough. If you have very thick or long hair, you may prefer two pumps, but I highly recommend starting with the least amount possible; it adds up quickly!

is it worth the price?

The Ouai Hair Oil is more expensive than most hair oils, especially when you consider the fact that it isn’t as nourishing or reparative as other hair oils. That said, it’s not overly expensive and because it doubles as a heat protectant, it’s worth the price in my opinion.

When you see this as a styling product, you really get a lot of value out of it. This oil adds shine, reduces frizz, and provides heat protection without weighing it down. It delivers on its promises and the results are noticeable, so even though it isn’t especially hydrating, it works exceptionally well as part of your daily styling routine.

The dream combo of heat protection and frizz reduction is why this is an absolute must-have any time I travel; hence why I buy the travel-sized version! You also only need one or two pumps at most, so the travel-sized option allows you to finish the bottle before it expires. I know that the travel-sized is more expensive per ounce, but it’s the better value for me.

If you want a singular hair product that works as:

  • A smoothing serum

  • A shine enhancer

  • A finishing oil

  • A heat protectant

  • A UV protectant

then the Ouai Hair Oil is absolutely worth adding to your haircare routine.

who the ouai hair oil works best for

I think the Ouai Hair Oil will work best for people who:

  • Want smoother hair

  • Want a glass-like, ultra-shiny finish

  • Struggle with frizz

  • Have dry or damaged ends

  • Want a lightweight finishing oil

  • Have fine, medium, or thick hair

Because it doesn't feel heavy, it's one of the few hair oils that works on all hair types. It also doubles as a heat protectant, so it’s an excellent two-in-one product.

skip it if

You may prefer a different hair oil if you:

  • have extremely damaged hair that needs intensive repair

  • want an oil that doubles as a scalp treatment/ serum

  • prefer fragrance-free products

  • want a thick, nourishing oil

  • want an oil that also helps with hair regrowth

  • want an oil that primarily adds hydration

  • deal with lots of frizz or flyaways at the root

If your hair is severely damaged from bleaching or chemical treatments, I recommend a more hydrating oil like Moroccanoil or the Dae Prickly Pear Hair Oil. For those with lots of flyaways close to your part, you might need something a little more heavy-duty like a styling cream.

ouai hair oil FAQ

Yes, it provides heat protection as well as protection from UV protection.

is the ouai hair oil good for fine hair?

Yes, it has a very lightweight formula, especially when you compare it to other oils like Davines Oi, Moroccanoil, or the Verb Ghost Oil. Still, using too much can weigh hair down so start with one pump and add more only if needed.

can you use it on dry hair?

Yes. If you want that ultra-shiny, glass-like finish to your hair, this oil does an incredible job.
