The Ultimate OUAI Haircare Guide
If you've been curious about Ouai, you're definitely not alone. The brand has become one of the most recognizable names in modern haircare thanks to its minimalist packaging, signature fragrance, and products that actually simplify your routine instead of adding unnecessary steps.
Their product line is full, featuring a collection of shampoos, conditioners, masks, leave-in treatments, oils, styling products, and scalp care for all hair types, yet some products stand out more than others. They’re known for their incredible scents and Instagram-worthy results, but if you’re accustomed to salon-exclusive products or budget-friendly options, it can be confusing to know if Ouai is worth trying.
Whether you're trying to repair damaged hair, fight frizz, add shine, or figure out which products are actually worth the money, my guide will walk you through the entire Ouai lineup. Wherever I can, I'll also link to my in-depth reviews and comparisons (with before-and-after photos) so you can decide which products are the best fit for your hair.
the ultimate ouai haircare guide: best products, reviews & comparisons (2026)
Founded by celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, Ouai focuses on effortless haircare with salon-quality formulas that are actually easy to use at home. Instead of pushing dozens of products for every possible concern, the brand offers a streamlined collection designed around different hair types and common hair goals.
Many of their formulas feature nourishing ingredients like coconut oil, babassu oil, hydrolyzed proteins, tamarind seed extract, and panthenol, so they don’t just care about making your hair look good; they want your hair to feel good and healthy, too.
One of the brand's defining features is how good their products smell. Many have a floral base, yet are still fresh, feminine, and luxurious. Fragrance is one of the brand’s pillars, so much so that they’ve started selling perfumes and hair/ body mists in addition to haircare products. I’m personally sensitive to fragrance and get migraines regularly, so while I tend to gravitate towards fragrance-free products, I love the Ouai scents.
is ouai worth it?
In my experience, OUAI falls into the premium haircare category without reaching luxury salon pricing. If you want the results of Oribe, Kersastase, or Davines, but want to be able to get your hair products on sale (or save by bundling), Ouai is the next best thing.
pros
Salon-quality formulas
Easy to use
Great for dry and frizzy hair
Elevated, elegant fragrance
Attractive packaging
Available at Amazon, Sephora, and Ulta
Will notice a difference from just one product; you don’t have to buy an entire regimen
cons
More expensive than drugstore brands
Fragrance may be too strong for sensitive users
Lacks fragrance-free options
Some products contain silicones depending on the formula
Not every product works for every hair type
Overall, I think the majority of Ouai products deserve the hype. Comparing Ouai to other brands, there’s less of a learning curve. The products do what they claim to, it’s easy to figure out which are best for your hair type, and they don’t damage your hair.
best ouai products by hair concern
for dry hair
I have dry hair, and no matter how many different haircare brands I try, I always go back to Ouai for these key staples:
Fine Shampoo (I alternate with Medium, just depending on what is in stock; both work well). Get the Thick version if you have thick hair.
Medium Conditioner (or Thick)
They also have a great leave-in conditioner that many people love, though I personally prefer Dae’s for my dry, damaged hair.
for damaged hair
As someone who bleaches and colors their hair regularly, I know that it’s important to focus on hydration and repair to fight damage. I was initially hesitant to try Ouai’s products because I was taught that salon-exclusive products are best, but Ouai is just as good in my opinion! Plus, you can often get products on sale, which is rare at a salon.
Hair Oil - less hydrating than other hair oils on the market, but if your hair is dull, this provides an instant pick-me-up. If you need nourishment, I prefer this hair oil.
Detox Shampoo - clarifying shampoos are typically drying, but when you’re using a lot of ultra-hydrating products, they can cause buildup and weigh your hair down, making strands more prone to breakage. Ouai’s Detox Shampoo is gentle yet effective; use weekly or every other week.
for fine hair
My hair is ultra-fine, so I love that Ouai provides lightweight hydration that still feels like it does something. I regularly use:
Medium Conditioner - they have a Fine version, but I find that Medium is in stock more often, and it doesn’t weigh down my hair.
Wave Spray - great if your hair falls limp throughout the day; this acts like a texturizing spray to give your style extra grip
Leave-In Conditioner - if your hair is fine but doesn’t need a ton of nourishment, Ouai’s leave-in is one of the best.
for thick hair
The Thick collection was specifically formulated for coarse, dry, and textured hair. My mom has thick hair, and I swear you can notice a difference when she uses Ouai’s Thick products versus the Medium or other brands’ Medium to Thick combo formulas.
for frizz
Anti-Frizz Hair Styling Cream - so good. Works well and is easy to use.
Medium Conditioner - simple, effective, and you can use it as part of your regular routine versus making time for special treatments, styling products, or masks.
for dandruff
Anti-Dandruff Shampoo - there are tons of drugstore options available, but this one is truly worth the money in my opinion.
Dry Shampoo - most dry shampoos are in aerosol containers and can be drying or damaging for your scalp. With Ouai’s, a little goes a long way and the product is effective without being overly drying.
my favorite ouai products
If you're new to the brand or just want to know which products are the best of the best, these are the ones I continually repurchase and recommend starting with. The true staples of my routine, these are worth every penny!
ouai detox shampoo
The Detox Shampoo is truly the best clarifying shampoo I’ve ever used. It lathers well and removes product build-up (as well as hard water residue) without stripping your hair of its natural oils or leaving it super dry. This formula is truly like the sisterhood of the traveling pants because it actually works for all hair types.
I use it every other week and whenever I get home from traveling, but depending on how much product you use on your hair (like dry shampoo), or if you sweat a lot, you may prefer using it once a week. Check out my full review for a breakdown of ingredients and how it compares to other clarifying shampoos.
ouai treatment mask
If you’ve visited my blog before, you may know that for years I used Ouai’s Treatment Mask in replacement of conditioner, which was a lifesaver since I wash my hair daily. While I have since fallen in love with the Medium Conditioner, the Treatment Mask is still a tried-and-true favorite.
It is creamy without being super thick, making it nourishing for dry hair without weighing it down. This is the perfect weekly deep conditioning treatment that delivers shine and hydration, especially if you have color-treated hair.
ouai hair oil
Here’s the thing to know: the Ouai Hair Oil isn’t your traditional nourishing hair oil. Instead, it is the best final step for ultra-shiny styles, like a slicked-back bun or a sleek look (a la Kardashians). It makes your hair shiny, bright, and fights frizz without feeling heavy or thick.
While it does provide heat protection, I think it works best as a style topper (and finisher), rather than of a hydrating treatment.
st. barts cleansing scalp & body sugar scrub
Never in my life did I ever think I’d like a product that could be used for both hair and body; I always thought they were scammy at best, damaging for either hair or body (or both) at worst.
That said, the St. Barts Cleansing Scalp and Body Sugar Scrub is good. Like, really good. You get a good amount of exfoliation from the sugar, but then it suds and lathers into the most luxurious, lightweight cleanse. My skin is very sensitive (especially to fragrance), yet I can use this without irritation or a bad reaction.
And as far as the scent goes, it’s one of Ouai’s best. It’s a tropical, fruity scent that has hints of creamy coconut and musk, so it’s elevated yet fun.
ouai product comparisons
I’ve created complete product comparison guides that can help you choose between similar products. I go into price comparison (including per ounce), pros, cons, which is best for which hair type, and which is overall worth the money.
