Amika Bust Your Brass Conditioner vs Mask
No matter how many hair products I try, I think the biggest struggle for me will be having to choose between the conditioner and mask. If you’ve visited my website in the past, you may know that I exclusively used a hair mask instead of conditioner for years, but I’ve come to really love a few select conditioners.
That said, my tendency is to pick the hair mask when I’m torn between the two, yet the idea of a toning mask sounded a little too strong for me. I have a tendency to over-tone my hair, and I dread the purple tint that comes with it. Still, my highlighted hair does need bond repair, so I was curious to see how the Bust Your Brass Toning and Strength Repair Mask would compare to the Cool Blonde Strength Repair Conditioner.
Below, I share side-by-side results as well as the similarities, differences, which is better for toning, and which is worth the money.

differences
toning power
The Hair Mask provides a stronger tone. You leave it on for three to five minutes; any longer and you run the risk of over-toning your hair (duller color and purple tint, not brighter hair). The Bust Your Brass Conditioner is formulated to provide maintenance rather than a strong reset.
If you have subtle highlights, you will prefer the gentler results of the conditioner. For those with more dimension, cool-toned highlights, or platinum hair, you will get better results with the mask.
hydration
Honestly, neither the conditioner or mask are particularly hydrating. This is because both formulas focus more on bond repair than hydration. The bond repair technology utilities proteins, which work to repair (and prevent) damage from the inside out; they don’t hydrate your hair. As such, you will want to use a hydrating leave-in conditioner with either of these products.
softness and shine
Surprisingly, I think the Hair Mask is the winner when it comes to adding softness and shine. I found that my hair felt the impact of the bond repairing proteins with the conditioner, whereas my hair didn’t have that heavy feeling after using the mask. My hair was noticeably shinier after using the mask, whereas it was a little harder to manage and style after using the conditioner.
daily vs weekly: frequency of usage
You can use the conditioner whenever you wash your hair, whereas you should only use the mask once a week (2x if you are naturally grey/ silver).
which gives better results?
Overall, I think the Hair Mask gives you better results because you get a great tone and tons of shine. The conditioner provides maintenance and subtle correction, so if you don’t need a heavy tone, that will give you better results. The conditioner was too heavy for my fine hair because of the proteins, which is why I’m giving the mask a higher rank.

which is better for fine hair?
I have fine, highlighted hair, and neither product weighed my hair down. That said, I personally prefer the results of the Bust Your Brass Hair Mask. The conditioner was a little too heavy for my hair; the bond-building technology made it harder to manage and slightly frizzier, whereas the hair mask gave me a good color reset. I will say, the hair mask didn’t hydrate my hair, though. If you want a color reset plus hydration, I recommend getting this toning conditioner instead (it’s also cheaper).
can the mask replace the conditioner?
Yes; you really don’t need both because they work effectively on their own.
If you just want light toning, the Conditioner is the way to go. If you want to be able to fully tone your hair in one step, though, the Hair Mask is a great option.
should you buy the conditioner or mask?
buy the conditioner if:
You have mild brassiness and just need maintenance.
You wash your hair several times a week.
You want bond repair rather than hydration.
Your hair is healthy and doesn't need a deep conditioning treatment.
You already use another hair mask and only want toning from your conditioner.
buy the mask if:
You have moderate to heavy brassiness or noticeable yellow tones.
Your hair is bleached, highlighted, or color-treated.
Your hair is dry, damaged, or over-processed.
You want stronger toning than what a conditioner provides.
You prefer a weekly treatment instead of having to tone at every wash.
buy both if:
You need a toning maintenance routine for blonde hair.
Your hair needs consistent brass control.
You're trying to extend the time between salon appointments.
You have fine, highlighted hair that's prone to both brassiness and damage.
You want to keep your blonde bright without overusing a heavily pigmented purple treatment or shampoo.
I personally bought the entire Bust Your Brass line for the sake of these reviews, but moving forward, I won’t repurchase the conditioner. I’m not sure if I’ll repurchase the mask, either; I honestly love the effects I get from this toning conditioner instead.
However, I do think if you are a platinum blonde or have naturally grey hair and are prone to damage, the Toning and Strength Repair Mask is worth it because it has the unique combination of toning against yellow and orange tones while also providing bond repair.
frequently asked questions
which tones hair better: the bust your brass conditioner or mask?
Both products help maintain cool blonde tones, but I’ve found that the mask provides slightly stronger toning because it stays on the hair longer. The conditioner is better for everyday maintenance rather than correcting heavy brassiness.
which is more moisturizing?
The Bust Your Brass Toning and Strength Repair Mask is more hydrating, though it’s not the most hydrating mask I’ve ever used. If you want toning plus moisturizing elements, get this toning conditioner instead.
can you use the mask instead of the conditioner?
Yes. The mask can replace your regular conditioner, just make sure to not overuse it. Most people only need to use the mask once a week or whenever their hair feels especially dry.
do you need both products?
Not necessarily. If you only want one, get the hair mask.
which is better for fine hair?
I have fine, highlighted hair and found that the hair mask gave my hair a better tone and added shine.
which should i buy?
Choose the conditioner if you want subtle toning and bond repair. Choose the mask if your hair needs intensive repair and shine enhancement in addition to toning.
