Amika Gloss vs Ouai Gloss
Hair gloss treatments have become one of the easiest ways to add shine and smoothness without weighing hair down, but they get a bad reputation for being difficult to use. They’re one of my favorite at-home hair treatments, and it’s truly so simple to do yourself (plus way cheaper). I’ve tried many glosses on the market and shared my before and after results with you, featuring brands like Pureology, Ouai, Amika, Davines, and more, but haven’t done a side-by-side comparison yet.
I’ve shared my full reviews of both the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask and the Ouai Hair Gloss on my website already, but after receiving a few emails requesting it, I wanted to give you a complete rundown and comparison of each gloss side by side. Below, I dive into what makes these glosses special and how to get the most of them at home. I share my before and after results of each, a price comparison, and my advice on which gloss is better for your hair type and goals.
amika flash instant shine mask vs ouai hair gloss
amika hair gloss results
The Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask is a quick hair treatment designed to boost shine and smooth the hair in just a few minutes. Although it’s technically a mask, it functions similarly to a gloss because it focuses heavily on shine and smoothing rather than deep repair.
Key features include:
adds noticeable shine
smooths frizz and flyaways
lightweight formula that rinses out quickly
works in one minute, whereas some glosses require 15-20 minutes
Like many products from Amika, it also contains sea buckthorn, an ingredient known for supporting hair hydration and shine. Because the treatment works quickly and doesn’t feel heavy, I love to use this as a weekly shine boost rather than a deep conditioning mask (that’s for another self-care session; I typically do both each week or alternate them).
pros
Makes your hair shiny, softer, and less frizzy
Brightens your color (but does not tone)
Easy to use
Only have to leave in your hair for 1 minute
Color-safe
Vegan and cruelty-free
Free from parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and mineral oil
Packaging - love the twist-nozzle top; it makes for easier application and storage (a lot of other glosses require you to cut the tip of the lid off)
cons
Does not tone your hair and will not replace purple/ blue shampoo in your regimen
Will weigh your hair down and leave a greasy residue if you use too much
Can make your hair feel a little dry immediately after use (but once your hair dries it feels SO soft and hydrated)
Can cause tangles in your hair if tangle-prone (I use conditioner and brush out my hair before the gloss to prevent this)
ouai hair gloss results
The Ouai Hair Gloss is a smoothing gloss treatment designed to enhance shine while helping reduce frizz. Where some glosses focus on adding shine, this also adds hydration back into your hair and the nourishment it provides is noticeable.
Hey features include:
enhances shine and smoothness
helps control frizz
lightweight treatment formula
also provides heat protection
Ouai’s gloss doesn’t just superficially improve the look of the hair; it’s infused with ingredients that improve hair quality, which sets it apart from other at-home glosses.
pros
Makes your hair shiny and softer
Adds hydration back into your hair (via hyaluronic acid)
Provides heat protection (for the next day or two)
Safe for all hair types, highlights, and color-treated hair
Only takes 5 minutes
cons
Strong floral scent
Will make your hair greasy if you apply too much or to the top half of your hair
Not a conditioner replacement as advertised (in my experience)
Likely to cause tangles if you don’t use conditioner prior
Will weigh your hair down/ make it harder to hold a curl if you use too much product
amika flash instant shine mask vs ouai hair gloss results comparison
key differences between amika and ouai gloss
treatment focus
The Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask leans slightly more toward conditioning and hydration while boosting shine, whereas the Ouai Hair Gloss focuses more on smoothing the hair and improving shine while reducing frizz.
texture
The Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask has a richer, creamier texture similar to a lightweight hair mask, while the Ouai Hair Gloss has a smoother, lighter consistency designed specifically for glossing and smoothing. I personally find it easier to disperse the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask product through my hair. You have to be really careful with the Ouai Hair Gloss because if you use too much, your hair feels super heavy and almost greasy (though that can be fixed within a shampoo or two).
shine and results
Both products noticeably increase shine, but they do so differently. I’d say the Ouai Hair Gloss gives you that glass-like shine (think Cher or Kardashian hair), while the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask simulates more of a salon treatment in that you get shine, yes, but also hydration - a good mix of the two.
If you want true shine and for your color to pop, get Ouai Hair Gloss. If you also want your hair to look (and feel) hydrated, the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask wins.
Similarly, if your hair feels dry, the Amika treatment may give a slightly softer finish, but if your hair tends to frizz easily, your hair will look smoother with the Ouai gloss.
ingredients comparison
I love that both products not only focus on shine and hair health; they’re also vegan and cruelty-free. That said, each gloss uses different ingredients to enhance shine and improve the appearance of your hair.
The Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask includes conditioning ingredients that help smooth the hair and support moisture:
Hydrolyzed Flax Seed - moisturizes and softens hair, while providing healthy-looking shine
Red Wine Extract - provides antioxidants that help to nurture, hydrate, and fight frizz
Amino Acid Complex - smooths, supports hair elasticity, and keeps color vibrant
The Ouai Hair Gloss focuses more on smoothing ingredients that coat the hair as means of protection and improve shine:
Sugar Beets - protect color and prevent damage
Rice Water, Hyaluronic Acid, and Panthenol - promote overall hair health and address damage
As such, the Ouai Hair Gloss provides heat protection, but the Amika mask does not.
price
If you’ve visited my site before, you know I love breaking down the price per ounce to ensure you’re getting the best deal overall - not just with the sticker price.
The Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask retails for $32 for 6.7 ounces, or $4.78 per ounce. The Ouai Hair Gloss costs $34 for a 6 ounce bottle, or $5.67 per ounce. Therefore, the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask is cheaper not only overall but also per ounce. That said, I think you end up using less Ouai Hair Gloss per use than Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask so I think their value is pretty similar overall and price shouldn’t be what makes you pick one over the other.
which gloss is better for fine hair?
I personally have fine hair, and I prefer the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask. Yes, it’s a thicker consistency, but it’s easier to use and you get hydration without weighing your hair down. I mentioned earlier that I use this every other week and alternate with a deep conditioner because it makes your hair really soft, too. It minimizes frizz, though you’ll need to add a heat protectant before styling.
The Ouai Hair Gloss adds lots of shine, but you are kind of screwed if you use too much because it makes your hair greasy and will weigh down fine hair.
which gloss is better for thick hair?
My mom has thick hair, and I had her extensively test these glosses as well to get her feedback (plus I saw her results). You can truly use both and get results; I think it comes down to softness vs frizz. If you want soft hair, get Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask, but if you want a sleek, Kardashian-like shine, get Ouai Hair Gloss.
If you are in between fine and thick, you can honestly use either gloss. For the sake of easier usage, I lean towards Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask because too much of the Ouai gloss makes your hair feel greasy, but if you have a lot of frizz, you’ll like how the hyaluronic acid in the Ouai Hair Gloss smooths your hair and adds shine.
which gloss is better for dry or damaged hair?
For hair that feels dry or rough, the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask is often the better choice because it provides a bit more hydration.
For frizz-prone hair that needs smoothing, the Ouai Hair Gloss can work better because it focuses on polishing and smoothing the hair.
If hydration is your main goal, you might also want to compare the brands’ hair masks in my guide to Amika Soulfood vs Ouai Hair Mask, where I break down which treatment works best for dry or damaged hair.
which gloss is better for frizzy hair?
The hyaluronic acid makes Ouai Hair Gloss better for taming frizz, though I will say I feel like Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask does a great job, too.
which gloss makes your hair shinier?
I think you could read a hundred reviews and they’d both be split pretty down the middle, but in my experience, the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask made my hair shinier. It did not weigh my hair down at all, so not only was it shinier, but my hair had more bounce and that made for a shinier appearance overall.
If you use too much of the Ouai Hair Gloss, your hair will look greasy, not shiny, but if you have thick hair, you may prefer the formula of Ouai.
Both give shine, so I’d say if your secondary concerns are brightness and softness, get Amika. If you want shine plus hydration, get https://amzn.to/43m9nRg.
which gloss is easier to use?
Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask, hands down. I try a TON of hair products and I’m pretty good with them, but the Ouai Hair Gloss definitely had a learning curve. I used too much the first time and my hair felt SO greasy the next day. Even if you use the right amount, it needs to sit for 5 minutes, whereas you can wash the Amika mask out in one minute.
That’s why I reach for the Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask more than the Ouai gloss. Both provide great results, but ease of use wins out for me and makes me more likely to consistently use a hair product, so I vote Amika.
