Is La Jolla Worth Visiting? (Honest Review + What to See)
If you're planning a trip to San Diego, you've probably come across countless recommendations to visit La Jolla. With its dramatic coastline, sea lions, upscale shopping, and famous beaches, it consistently ranks as one of the city's top destinations. That said, is La Jolla actually worth visiting, or is it just another overhyped tourist trap?
As a southern California native who has visited countless times, my unbiased opinion is that yes, La Jolla is absolutely worth visiting, especially if it's your first time in San Diego. Anytime I take my Bostonian relatives to visit, they are blown away and it’s one of the top highlights of the entire trip. And whenever I want a staycation vibe without going too far, La Jolla is the destination that comes to mind.
With picturesque coastal scenery, the ability to see wildlife from just feet away, and lots of (free) activities to do, you won’t want to miss out on La Jolla. Below, I share some of my top tips and advice for when La Jolla is (and isn’t) worth adding to your itinerary.
is la jolla worth visiting?
Yes! I love La Jolla, and highly recommend visiting if you:
are visiting San Diego for the first time.
like beaches, photography, and ocean views.
want to see sea lions or seals in the wild.
want a relaxing day that still feels unique and special without a packed sightseeing schedule.
enjoy scenic coastal walks.
You might skip it if you’re
only visiting San Diego for one day.
not interested in beaches or coastal scenery.
primarily looking for museums, nightlife, or amusement parks.
what makes la jolla so special?
Unlike many beach towns, La Jolla combines gorgeous natural scenery with a walkable downtown full of restaurants, boutiques, galleries, and cafes.
One of its top selling points is that you can experience several completely different attractions without driving between them.
In one afternoon you can:
Walk along ocean cliffs
Watch sea lions lounging on rocks
Explore sandy beaches
Have lunch (casual, cheap, or upscale) with an ocean view
Watch surfers and kayakers (or join them!)
Shop
Catch an incredible sunset
It's one of the few places in San Diego where everything feels close together and easily walkable.
the best things to do in la jolla
I have a complete La Jolla Travel Guide full of everyhthing there is to see and do, but these are the activities you won’t want to miss in La Jolla.
explore la jolla cove
This is the postcard image most people associate with La Jolla.
The water is often incredibly clear, the cliffs are beautiful, and you'll almost always see sea lions relaxing nearby. It's a relatively small cove, but it's easily one of the most scenic spots in San Diego. You won’t regret visiting!
A little secret: skip Sunny Jim’s Cave. If you have seen the photos online, you’ve seen it. You basically pay to walk down slippery steps, and then back up.
visit children's pool
Children's Pool has become one of the best places to observe harbor seals; it’s also one of the most picturesque views of La Jolla. Depending on the season, you may see dozens of seals resting on the beach.
see the sea lions
One of my favorite parts of visiting La Jolla is simply watching the wildlife, and I’m not alone. Don’t be surprised if you spend more time watching the sea lions than you expect! Even though my friends have seen them tons of times, we can’t help but stop for a good 20 minutes anytime we’re in La Jolla.
Sea lions can often be found along the seawall, near the cove, or around Children’s Pool beach. They’re honestly everywhere and not hard to spot! The sea lions are entertaining to watch, and seeing them in their natural habitat is something you don't experience in many cities.
Just remember to admire them from a safe distance. They aren’t always sectioned off so people are tempted to see how close they can get, but it is their home first and foremost.
explore the tide pools
Checking out the tide pools is one of my favorite things to do in La Jolla, though you obviously have to time it with the tide levels. There are lots of different nooks you can explore, and you always see at least a few critters swimming around.
If you aren’t able to time your visit with the tide but still want to check out ocean creatures, head to Birch Aquarium. It’s state-of-the-art and includes touch pools that all ages love.
walk the coast
Even if you don't spend time at the beach, the coastal walk alone is worth visiting. Some people like to head down to the beach, but depending on the tide, there are plenty of paved paths that offer panoramic ocean views almost the entire way. Perfect for photography or simply enjoying the scenery, you may also spot a wedding or proposal as you explore!
walk around downtown la jolla
Downtown is filled with boutiques, coffee shops, ice cream, art galleries, and plenty of restaurants at all price ranges. It feels much more upscale than many other beach towns while still remaining relaxed. Check out my La Jolla Travel Guide for all of my food recommendations, from coffee and brunch to dinner and dessert.
watch the sunset
If your schedule allows, stay until sunset. You may have seen a thousand beach sunsets, but watching the sun set over the Pacific from the cliffs is one of the best free experiences in San Diego. If the beaches seem crowded, head to Torrey Pines Glideport!
how much time do you need?
You can get a lot out of La Jolla in just a few days, or stretch it into a full weekend getaway. Depending on what you want to see and do I recommend planning for:
2–3 hours - see La Jolla Cove and walk the coastline.
Half day - add shopping (or checking out the tide pools) and lunch.
Full day - visit nearby beaches, kayak, snorkel, head to Birch Aquarium, or relax by the ocean.
If you don’t want to do any paid activities (water sports, the aquarium, etc.), then a half-day is perfect.
is la jolla expensive?
Compared to other parts of San Diego, yes.
Parking can be limited, restaurants tend to be pricier with a few random fees added on, and the shopping is more upscale.
However, it’s worth noting that many of the best experiences are completely free, including:
Walking the coastline
Seeing sea lions
Visiting the beaches
Checking out the tide pools
Watching the sunset
Exploring downtown
If you're traveling on a budget, you can easily enjoy La Jolla without spending much beyond parking and a meal.
when is the best time to visit?
La Jolla is beautiful year-round, but some times are better than others, especially if you want to avoid peak crowds. Summer weekends are the busiest and can make parking much more difficult, so I personally recommend:
Weekday mornings for fewer crowds
Don’t forget to check the tide charts if you want to explore the tide pools.
Spring and fall for pleasant weather
Keep in mind that San Diego (including La Jolla) experiences May grey and June gloom, meaning there’s lots of coastal fog in the mornings and evenings. Weather is chillier than you expect, and the sunsets are more foggy than vibrant. October and November brings some of the best “summer” weather.
Sunset for the best views
is la jolla worth visiting with kids?
Yes! While its upscale reputation doesn’t seem particularly kid-friendly, La Jolla is often a kid’s paradise. They love seeing the sea lions and seals, exploring the beaches, and watching surfers and kayakers.
A little local’s note: some beaches have stronger waves, so always pay attention to posted safety signs.
is la jolla worth visiting if you've already been to other san diego beaches?
Yes. Each San Diego beach has its own personality, and there’s something to love about each. While places like Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are more energetic and boardwalk-focused, La Jolla feels quieter, more scenic, closer to nature, and a little more upscale.
Seeing wild sea lions up close is something you can’t really replicate, and there’s lots more to do, from kayaking to shopping and exploring the tide pools. Overall, La Jolla is one of the few tourist attractions that doesn’t feel touristy.
pros and cons of visiting la jolla
pros
Beautiful coastal scenery
Excellent chance of seeing sea lions and seals
Walkable downtown
Great restaurants and cafes
Lots of photography opportunities
Plenty to see and do without spending much money
cons
Parking can be challenging, especially during peak summer season

Anytime I have family coming to visit, one of the main areas that I take them to is La Jolla because it offers a little bit of everything that makes California special - beautiful beaches, stunning views, incredible wildlife, and a relaxed, beach town vibe.
Whether you only have a few hours to spare or want to make a full day (or weekend) out of it, there’s plenty to see and do. Lots of tourist destinations are overhyped in my opinion, but La Jolla is absolutely worth visiting. It's one of the most scenic and memorable places in San Diego and lives up to its reputation.
